I am wondering how many people had trouble getting their bike inspected this month with aftermarket exhausts. I got my inspected today barely.
I have DG Kickers on my '02 VTX1800R. At idle the mechanic was fine with my bike, but as soon as he gave the throttle a decent twist he immediately went and got the decibal meter. He ultimately gave me a generous score of 105db. My understanding is 106 is failing. Two bikes in line before me were sent home without a sticker due to pipes being too loud.
Most of my buddies with different brands of bikes have been checked with the meter, but a couple of guys have had stickers put on without having the noise level checked.

Law banning 'straight pipes' on motorcycles OK'd
By COLIN MANNING

CONCORD— Motorcycle riders will face stiffer penalties come August for bikes that are too loud.
House and Senate members of a committee of conference came to agreement Wednesday on legislation (HB 326) banning so-called "straight pipes" on exhaust systems which Seacoast are police chiefs have said lead to excessive noise and a lot of complaints from residents in the summer.
The full House and Senate must now approve the measure next week, which takes affect 30 days after passage. Those caught with straight pipes will be fined $100 for a first offense and up to $500 for subsequent offenses. The current fine for extreme noise is $43.
Current law does ban straight pipes, but according to House Transportation Committee Chairman Sherman Packard, R-Londonderry, the language of the law is a bit ambiguous.
"Hopefully this will lead to some convictions and people will pay attention to what we're doing. I'm hopeful this will take the biggest offenders off the roads,"Packard said.
Police from Portsmouth, Exeter, Rye and Seabrook were the driving force behind the legislation, but they had hoped to also change the parameters for testing motorcycle noise.
Current law prohibits any person from operating a motorcycle that has a measured noise level of more than 106 decibels. What makes enforcing the law a challenge, according to police, is the mandate for how the noise level is measured.
The existing law requires that a decibel meter be held 20 inches from the exhaust pipe at a 45 degree angle, while the engine is operating at 2,800 revolutions per minute for motorcycles with one or two cylinders and 3,500 rpms for motorcycles with three or more cylinders.
In order to properly conduct the test, a police officer would need a decibel meter, which many departments do not have. In addition, at least two officers are needed to conduct the test, one to operate the meter and the other to check the rpms. Packard said the Legislature rejected any change in the test for noise because it is really the only proven method available to police.
"It really wouldn't have been fair to change the test to something that is unproven," Packard said. Instead, the committee of conference agreed to keep the current testing system in place, but increase the fines for violating the 106 decibel level from $43 to $100 for a first offense and up to $300 for subsequent offenses.
"The police chiefs wanted a different test, but we all know things change here incrementally," Sen. Martha Fuller Clark, D-Portsmouth. "We'll try these changes and see if there's an impact. If not, we can always address the issue again."

I just got my bike inspected at Naults in Windham - BARELY passed. Funny thing was the guy looks into my V&H pipes and says "You have no baffles." I replied "Interesting. I got my pipes installed here 3k miles ago and brought in the V&H 'quiet baffles' and they were supposed to be installed. So if they aren't in there, we need to talk."
He has me twist the throttle, says they are too loud. Gets the meter, and says turn it up to 2k RPM. No tach. He says I ran a couple of DBs high and he was going to pass it.
Just had a friend try to get her Sportster inspected at the Harely dealer where she bought the bike and the pipes...no dice. Her dealer said they were getting fined too many times for passing bikes that were too loud so the only thing they were passing was stock pipes and Screaming Eagles.
I don't run straight pipes. I don't crack on it hard (at least not very often). I even sold my stock pipes.
I would hate to think next June I will be looking to buy Stock Pipes and re-install the pair valve crap just to ride...

I was able to get a sticker at Lightning Lube in Goffstown at 764 Mast Road. I pulled in and asked if my pipes would be too loud (2-1 HK Sideburners). He said, "Don't sound too loud to me!" Then proceeded to get a sticker. No problem whatsoever. If you're in the Manchester area, it might be worth the little ride over to see these guys.

Hey Jrfixer..
I'd love to give that a shot, I used ceramic baffle wrap when I first got my
Bigshots, but the guy who sold the stuff is long gone..
I am in Hooksett, PM me maybe we can hook up one of these nights for a
ride..
