How long of a ride does it have to be to qualify to be an "Iron Butt" ride? I've done a couple of 350 mile there-and-backs in a day, does that work?

This will tell you all about it.

The minimum however, is 1000 miles in 24 hours or less.

Yeah 1000 miles in 24 is the start, but I did a ride yesterday with the wife that should count for something :D . Rode from Jacksonville NV to Florece SC and back, and heard "it is too hot, lets pull over, the seat is not comfortable" . So when you do long rides and want to go with someone else make sure they have the stamina to do it, it is more strenious than in the cage.

1000 miles in 24 hours, I just can't see that happening until I invest some serious bucks in a Mustang Seat!!!!!

I just rode 7000 miles in 11 days doing a tour of western states with my brother. He rode a Goldwing and I rode my 2003 VTX 1800 retro. The first day was 845 miles. The last day was a little over 1200 miles in 18 1/2 hours from Scottsbluff Arkansas to Vine Grove Kentucky. The stock VTX seat was pretty comfortable. (my mustang seat arrived while I was on the ride)

Heya sfc_stjohn,
Honestly, you don't have to invest big bucks in a new seat to make long runs. I just did a 4 day 1,400 mile trip on my stock seat.
I do have an Airhawk seat cushion ($150, the new "medium" crusier size is perfect for the VTX) in my bags ... but I haven't used it yet. I've ridden over 7K in the last 90 days my stock seat. Found that my butt get's tougher the more miles I ride.
Lots of motorcycle riding: Wonder if that's where the term "hard ass" comes from?
Ride safe,
Jim

You should have made it 10,000 in 10days. You could have qualified for the 10/10ths award.
Just a few more miles, and one less day. :D

You must have got lost its only 491.4 miles, 7 hours 33 minutes from Scotts Bluff Arkansas to Vine Grove Kentucky.

There's an old military saying: "On a 100 mile march, the half way point is at 90 miles..."

hello all!!! this is my 1st post here. i just bought a 05 vtx 1300 2 weeks ago. anyhow, you could say i acheived my "iron butt'" at a young age.
when i was about 10 years old i went through the entire western us and into mexico on the back of a 1984 gold wing 1100 with my dad. it took 3 months. we hit every national park on the way and we never stayed in any motels, all camping in a 2 man pop tent on the side of roads or where ever we could hide away for some rest.
than the following summer, we did it again, another 3 months. both times we departed from detroit.
after i was dropped off (i had to go back to school..bummer..) my father rode onward and put 1/4 a million miles on that bike without ONE SINGLE PROBLEM!!!!
now i have my own bike and i need to do it again!!!!!!

We did the OctoberFest Fun Run in NM last Sat. Started at 0830 (my part) and was back home by 4 pm for 390 miles (5.5 hours) And had time for a 2-hour lunch stop at 12 noon in San Antonio, NM. Had removed a band from the inside of the foam on my stock seat. 8) Nice and comfortable...

Two weeks after I got my first motorcycle earlier this year- a 1985 Kawasaki Ninja 600 that I named "Dr. Thompson" in honor of the late HST- I rode around the Olympic Peninsula and took a couple of side trips. Covered 800+ miles in about 12 hours.
It didn't even occur to me that was even slightly excessive. At the time, I'd never even heard of "Iron Butt". :) Now that I'm on my '03 VTX 1800S, long rides are even less of a problem. I think I'm going to seriously enjoy doing some long-haul riding. Heck, my commute is 150 miles a day!

I'm still having trouble with the Scotts Bluff Arkansas to Vine Grove, Kentucky
Now if it's Scotts Bluff, Nebraska to Kentucky; that'd be a Iron Butt 1,000 mile run. Yahoo shows 1,120 miles.

I don't consider myself a IRONBUTT but I do like to ride. The longer the ride the happier I am. I shoot for 700 miles a day. I can't see very good after dark, too much welding I guess. The best I have done this year was 724 miles started at Okmulgee,Ok. at 10:00am got to Murfreesboro,Tn. at 6:50pm Had to stop got dark and couldn't see good.

I thought IronButt was 1,000 miles in 12 hours. My cousin is a IronButt with sticker on his windshield and had to do 924 milels in less than 12 hours, he did it in 11:14, to get his sticker and be put in the IronButt book.
I am gettin older and I might have missed something.

He must have meant Scotts Bluff, NE My Tripmaker software (very accurate) has it at a little over 1200 miles.

1,000 in 24 hours or less. you gotta document the ride, start, finish and gas stops in between or it don't count.
did my first "official" Iron butt this year. 19 hours, 1036 miles... Spiceland IN to Macanaw and back. Check out the Iron Butt Site or the Motorcycle Tourers Forums. they have all the rides and rules.
Tim Yow, is my hero. Coast to Coast to Coast in less than 90 hours!.. way to go Tim and he finished the 05 IB in 71st position. NOt bad for a rookie Iron Butt Rally competitor.
I did mine on a 99 Valk Tourer, gas hog that is all I can say except I am a Iron Butt Member. # 23063.
200 - 300 for lunch - just a warm up ride. thanks mike

A bud and I did Cedar City, UT, to the Hopi Indian Reservation on the east side of Tuba City, AZ (256 miles one way) as a round trip (512) last weekend. Hmm ... does 500 miles qualify me for an Iron Cheek?
Interesting thing is that he was on a Yamaha 650 and did pretty well on the ride. Of course my VTX 1800 road a lot smoother at highway speeds, but his little Yamaha made the trip and back without a hitch. It was his first "long ride" and he got so much of a kick that I think he's now shopping for a bigger bike.

Thanks ARMDILLO, I have a trip planned a little latter on. I used msn map and I thought i would ride from Scottsboro, alabama to Mobile, alabama twice. That would be 1,504 miles. I will get my cousin to go with me he loves those 1,000 mile trips in a day. It will give me a chance to try out my 1800t

They give an example of repeated trips to add up to 1000 miles...
I think in Florida...they (IBA) does not recommend doing it that way.
Not sure if they will disqualify you, but would check.
Or... make a loop, like after getting to Mobile, head over to Slidell and back up thru Mississippi via Jackson, Meridian and then back home.
Would be much better ride to not do same trip twice.
When they finish corridor X to Memphis, it will be a great route to visit Vulcan, Elvis, USS Alabama and return all in a day for a Iron Butt... hummmm,
'Cotton Ball Iron Butt'
If you don't make it... your a Boll Weavel

There are different rides that qualify as Iron Butt....
www.Ironbutt.com (http://www.Ironbutt.com) will show various mileage in specific amount of time.
I did the Bun Burner Gold which is 1500 miles in less than 24 hours. They most certainly named it correctly. I don't believe there is any way to do it without breaking the speed limit on occasion.

Does kilometers count. I rode from Toronto to the Rockies to Vancouver to Northern California and back home again over 12,000 kms in 20 days, my butt was sore with the factory seat, therefore am buying the ultimate seat...

Maybe you guys (and or ladies) have buns of steel but 1000 miles in 24 hours sounds like WORK to me. I have a hard time thinking of 20+ hours in the sadle as "fun".

1000 miles in 12 hours is an AVERAGE speed of 83.3 MPH with NO gas stops. Not likely, factoring in stops.
