Greetings all!

I need a bit of advice, that isn't exactly bike related.

I'm a computing consultant, and thus, I travel around a bit. Sometimes, that travel is of a long enough nature that I just pack up, and move.

Well, to make a short story long, I may have one of those moves looming up on the horizon.

I may have an opportunity to relocate from hurricane plagued Florida, to Los Alamos.

Soooo... The question is: How liveable is Los Alamos?
Is housing as hard to find as rumored?
How is the weather?
Riding conditions, the dreaded morning commute (traffic), etc.

I'd greatly appreciate any info you can send along.
If it's going to be harsh, I'll pass on this one.
I've dug around on the internet for information, and found a lot. But there's nothing like first hand info.

Thanks in advance!

Ride safe

You lucky dog. We have 300 days of sunshine a year here. The scenery and weather is the best in the US. :D

Hi Ric,
I live in Albuquerque, but I grew up in Los Alamos many, many years ago. I have family still living there.
As you may know already, Los Alamos is a small town, about 20,000 people. Being a small town, traffic is really not a problem. But it has the same small town limitations: shopping, resturaunts, entertainment etc are limited and close up early. Housing is limited and expensive. It is a mountain community so the weather is generally cooler in the summer and you do get the full 4 seasons. (Read Snow) So that will reduce the days you can ride vs. Albuquerque. There are excellent areas to ride all around Los Alamos. It is one of my favorite day rides to go through the Jemez Mountains to Los Alamos. If you have a family, the schools are some of the best in the state.
If you have more questions, I would be happy to talk to you about it.

Man I wish I could relocate to Albuquerque! I am tired of the hurricanes here. I hear the mountain riding is awsome there. How do you like living there and is the realstate as crazy as it is here in FL?

Yeah, central and northern NM is great. I've lived here for 51 years and lovin it. As far as houses go, you can get 3 bedroom for around $120k or so. Most avereage $150k. If your real cheap you can get a new 2 bedroom for $80k in some places. The cost of living is low but so is the pay. NM is one of the poorest states around. But DAMN, 300 days of sunshine a year. I ride year around unless we get the occasional snow in the city.

I almost retired in Albuquerque. I just retired from the USN in February and I was really wanting to go there. I myself have never been to NM, but a Navajo girl that worked for me had told me so many great things about it. I enjoy riding myself, and so I researched a bit and saw that there are some awsome routes in NM. Great mountain scenes abound. I am originally from NYC and I wanted to go somewhere not quite like NYC but not too small town. My problem was finding employment in NM. I couldn't find a job, so I ended going where the Job took me, which in my case is Fort Myers FL. I purchased a home here that is in Pre construction. It will be valued at three times the price for your three bedroom home before it is finished. I am still dreaming of selling and going there. I guess I will see what God has for me in the future. Perhaps we will ride together one day. Thanks for the response and ride safe.
