(Columbia-AP) -- Defending champion Gaffney rallied from eight
points down in the second half to beat Lower Richland 64-to-60 in
the Class Four-A boys' championship tonight.
The Indians took the lead for good at 61-to-60 with just over a
minute-and-a-half to go on Phillip Buckson's bucket in the lane.
It was the last of five lead changes and six ties in the final
six minutes.
The loss broke a 25-game winning streak for the Diamonds and
left veteran coach Chip Atkins without a state championship. Atkins
is the second-winningest active coach in South Carolina with 568
victories.
Lower Richland led 47-to-39 in the last minute of the third
quarter before Gaffney ran off ten straight points to take the lead
on A-Z Reed's three-point play with about six minutes to go.
