Got this from WTHR's website this morning...be careful out there!

Indiana, Aug. 10 - There are statewide concern over the amount of motorcycle deaths, Indiana outpaces the nation at nearly twice the national pace.

According to our newsgathering partners at the Indianapolis Star, in 2004, 96 motorcyclists died in Indiana. That's an 18.5 percent increase from the year before.

The state's motorcycle program blames the fatalities on untrained owners; return riders who don't understand traffic patterns and high speeds; drunk riders, alcohol was involved in 50 percent of cycle fatalities and relaxed helmet laws.

In Indiana, only riders under 18 or those carrying permits must wear helmets.

What I don't like is they never compare apples to apples. If accidents went up over last year, I want to know how many new riders were on the road from last year, not from the last five years. I remember the AMA revealed that while MC Accidents went up in a year 15 percent, the number of new riders went up 30 percent in the same year, that is actually a reduction! No mention of that in the article.

I always wear a helmet, but I fear this is a prelude to a new law...

Accidents don't happen, they are caused.

And they attribute the increase to new riders, those who haven't learned everyone else on the road is out there to try and kill you!!

I too always wear a helmet and have no opinion of helmet laws. To each his own. However, if the numbers are looked at, most deaths occur with helmetless riders. I wonder how many of these helmetless riders are the "new" or "returning" riders the article talks about.

It would be nice to delve into the stats, and see what is really going on. I preach to anyone intersted in riding to get to the Safety Class.

I saw an editorial in the paper that someone was asking for Helmet Laws once again. I think I lean to someone waiving there health rights if involved in an accident on a motorcycle. We all have to pay a dear price for someone injured, but I don't think it is dear enough for freedom.

MY QUESTION IS WHAT KIND OF BIKE IS INVOLVED MORE? WHAT AGE GROUP ? IT IS PROBABLY SPORT BIKES AND 18 OR 19 YEAR OLD RIDERS DOING STUPID SHI**. I RIDE A LOT ON THE CURVES OF BROWN CO. I SEE A LOT OF YOUNG RIDERS WITH LITTLE EXPERENCE TAKING CURVES TOO FAST :!: SO I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ALL THE INFO NOT A GENERAL VIEW ON THIS.
