View Full Version : VTX Mileage Error and SS/1000??

Pit's Rule

When qualifying for the SS/1000, obviously my stock odometer and the inexpensive Garmin E-trac I purchased are not going to match up, at the end of the trip. Hell, they won't match after the first 100 miles!

What is the remedy for this when I submit my documentation to the IBA?

Which mileage do I record at fuel stops, etc.?

I know I can trust the GPS, but I would prefer not to have to ride an extra 100-200 miles, just to make sure the IBA is satisfied.

I'm sure this is a ridiculous question for some of you folks that are veteran long-haulers, but this IBA thing is all new to me. I didn't want to drop a lot of money on electronic gadgetry, that I may not find useful in the future.

I suppose at the end of the day, it may not be relevant. I would expect that when the GPS assures me we have busted the 1000 miles, and reads 1056,..the VTX odometer will read 1142, I'll send all the paperwork into the IBA, they will do the math, no problems,..Right?

Guess I am just looking for a little reassurance and insurance that (especially since there are two other X'ers going with me!!!) we won't have any gliches when the paperwork gets to the IBA.

One other question, in the event that we were to find ourselves unusually ahead of the game, let's say at the 1000 mile mark, and pushed on for the 1500/24 BB Gold (I do not expect this to occur, but stranger things have happened, right?) do I understand the IBA rules correctly, that we would not qualify, since one of the lesser two rides was not completed prior?

Thanks in advance,

Pete

Add 10% to be safe.
They will use program like mapquest or MSN to figure miles.
Odo really does you no good.
Be sure to buy fuel at any and every trip off the main drag you take.
Like side trips or visits to something out of the way.
I did and it helped make trip enjoyable and not so boring.
They counted everything I had fuel ticket for.

I understand (have not done) that you qualify for the 1000 if you do the 1500.
You have to pay extra if you want both certs.

1000 is fun, 1500 may be work.

More on mileage...
They figure gas ticket to gas ticket.
So think about that at every corner or major highway change you make.
A computer program like mapquest is used, and when you think about how easy it would be to talk about where you went vs a printed fuel ticket,
It makes everyone that earns it know its not made up.

You can get a witness at each corner, but is easier to just buy fuel.

Lay out your trip on Mapquest or Tripmaker before you leave just to make sure. IBA will verify based on gas tickets. Make sure if you use pay at the pump that their calender is set right. We had to get one fixed in Kansas that was "off". Lost about 15 minutes there trying to convince clerk that it was important that she at least initial the receipt, date and time so it could be verified.

Photographs of the GPS and ODO before and after your run are good too.

IBA will use Mapquest (or the like) to verify official miles.
They realize that the odometers will be off - its OK - report actual odo readings (not corrected). Your witnessess will see actual odo readings (not corrected). Have them sign off to what they actually see.
You'll be off more than you think (short, especially a Jap bike) - use Mapquest (etc) INCLUDED in your paperwork, for official mileage - no problem.

Use timed/dated gas station receipts for your official times. ATM receipts are an alternative. There really is no problem, these days, getting a timed receipt anymore.

If you can possibly take a shortcut (by looking at a map) you must have a receipt at the corner/apex/furthest point to absolutely prove you rode the distance - if not, then no certs - plan ahead.
IBA SS1000 has to be completed before IBA 1500BBGold for credit. BBG is considered an exteme ride - they want you to get some experience first before tackling such a hard ride.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with the IBA - read their rules (I did).

Good luck - HAVE FUN! Wish me luck on my next IB ride- BBG, April 8th! wooo hooo! :D
