I was chatting with some fellow rides that have completed the Iron Butt.
Their advice sounded like good advice.

1. Pick your route carefull, stick to freeway and don't start 20 minutes from the freeway. Stay the night next to your starting point in a hotel.
2. Avoid major citys ( like Chicago, LA, New Your )
3. Do it in the summer months ( more daylight hours )
4. Leave before Daylight ( LIMIT the time at the end after dark )
5. Comfortable seat ( #1 in my book )

I had one say "do it alone" you know your limits and don't be limited by anothers..

To your suggestions I would check for road construction and times on your route.

I did 2 solo 1kIB's in July. Atlanta to St.Paul. On on eleg I left at 9PM and on the return I left at 5AM. My times were set by road constructions schedules. The heaviest road construction was in Illinois. It ran from the middle of Illinois to the Wisonsin boarder. I checked with Ill. DOT and they strongly suggested that I hit this area of Ill. after 7AM when the constructions crew quite for the day. The only work at night. The construction crews in Georgia on the other hand work in the day. I didn't hit any delays. Some of these construction segments were over 20 miles long. I've hit some of those in Ga. and it took 3 hours to travel what you could normally do in 30 minutes.

i say do it with a TRUSTED friend. not alone. you can split up the "must take for emergency" stuff. and in case of trouble you're not alone.
and hydrate!! in summer ya sweat just riding. we took water, bought water and drank it all! could feel when we needed more, mentally.
