What is a good GPS to get what do you use .
What are the pros and cons.
Don't want to spend more than $600.00
I'm using a garmin street pilot 3.
works great for me, guess it's because I've figured out how to work it.
it is discontinued now, they've come out with newer versions some of the guys lilke, 2610,2620 etc.
some are using the lowrance iway 500 and iway350.
lots of good ones to chose from, good luck in your search.

a decent amount of memory is KEY for holding maps.. Garmin just came out with a 512 meg card, I went 256 and III'll wait for the gig to come out..

I use a Garmin GPSMAP60CS. Works great, not too small and easy to use. Runs around $350. I've got it mounted with a RAM Mount and I've hardwired the power straight to the battery.

Hey Rudy, I have a Garmin 2610 I picked up on ebay, cheap. It is waterproof, nice size screen, and it uses a compact flash card for memory, so you don't have to worry about the hard drive going bad. I have it mounted on with a Ram mount. and I have a mount on my Truck. So I use it year round. Come by the house and I'll let you check it out.

I use and love the Iway-500
pros-
big enough to see

no cards or disks to use, its got it all already stored in it
touch screen
personalize the screen to see what you want to see, in lg or sm font
(MPH, Elev, turn preview, volts, clock and alot more)
can be seen in sunlight, and screen will dim at night
easy to program
completly water proof
cons-
its big and heavy
has a MP-3 player i dont use much (I also have XM)
tough screen dont work well with winter gloves on
had to buy a better mount too make it ridgid (8 bucks)
it may be slightly higher than 6 bills

I just got the iWay500c that PepsX is refering to. I have been very happy with it so far.

We have the Garmin c330. I haven't mounted it on the bike yet, but it does have an easy to read screen and easy to read menu. We used it on a trip to Toronto and no problems at all getting around (it was our first trip there).
The only downside is that it's kinda large for the handle bars.

LaMonster has that one now...might ask him what he thinks about it. Its about half the size of the iway 500c screen. Saw one sitting there in Lowrances display at the plant here in town. I thought I read somewhere that one may not be waterproof though.
Tejas loves his iway 500. Just added speakers to the bike so he can use the MP3s that way and you can hear the voice that gives you direction info cut into the MP3s. I think you can turn off the voice if you don't want to hear it doing that.
Oh and I've seen Tejas use the touch screen feature with his winter gloves on while going down the road and has no problem with that.

Ia little tricky, but it's the current software version that causes that problem from my talking to Lowrance.

Peps, some of us do get colder than 50 degrees for winter. And some of us even use electric gloves to keep frost bite away.

Pretty good prices and excellent service.
I got the Garmin 276C. Darn thing is way smarter than I am. Love it. Has two types of 12v plug ins. One is "standard" the other has a speaker built in. (Yes, I have a cigarette lighter.)
Like the speaker most of the time. The voice is a woman. If you miss a turn, she suggests that I turn around. Pretty cool until she starts the damn nagging. I shut her up when she starts in on putting the toilet seat down!!

Check out Ubid.com Bought this model reconditioned by Garmin for $406.
Love it but you will have to hard wire it to the bike since it has no battery.

I recently got a Garmin Quest for $300.00, It is a lot smaller than most but has lots of things it can do (talks, color screen, ect) they have optinal motorcycle mount for it also claim 20 hr battery for hand held use. I have been using it in my truck so far and think its great. As soon as the snow and cold go away I will give it a try on the X.

I have to put my plug in for the Garmin 60CS, but first point out that I don't use it on the X. I've used GPS's on a regular basis for around 6 years, and have to say that this is one of the coolest units I've ever had the fortune to play with. Not only does it have all the top-end features that other units have (color screen, WAAS capability, firewire transfer, etc.), but it also has a barometric altimeter and magnetic compass inside. For anyone that does any sort of hiking or just like a little bit more than what the other systems offer, I'd go with the GPSMap 60CS. Ok...shameless plug over.

There was a thread on that a while back. I, too, have a 650, and kind of liked the idea but I found out that if you get or make a phone call then you have to reprogram the GPS portion for your trip. That sounds like more trouble than it's worth to me and, besides, that's a pretty small screen to try to see on a handlebar mount while I'm riding. I'll stick with my Garmin 2610.
