I am considering a GPS system for travelling on my VTX 1300. Has anyone had any experience or advise on low cost reliable GPS unit. I would appreciate all comments. [/b]

Take a look at this one i put this on my bike and for the price (cheap) I like it you can buy the handlebar bracket from R A M I put a 12V power source (cigarette lighter socket) waterproof boat unit down buy my key switch. I think i only paid $180.00 shipped. The unit is in black and white the speaker is in the power cord but you can add an external antennae and i think you can use head phones. I was going to use the personal hand held units with the bluetooth but for my 1st i wanted something cheaper and tough i wouldnt change now for nutin but if you have a use for the other functions of the Ipaq go for it too.I had acually bought one at Brandsmart and bought the software and the bluetooth headset and the toatal was around 800.00 but when i went to check out they were out of the unit so i got a refund befor i even left the store. Lucky me gave me time to find this one . Check it out may be what you are looking for

This isn't a sales pitch.. I am VP Ops for a company that makes moving map navigation systems for light aircraft using the iPAQ and software plus GPS receiver. (www.anywheremap.com (http://www.anywheremap.com))

The PDA is a pretty good way to go since it's flexible and can be used for many things, not just your mapping. There are a bunch of GPS receivers; some can plug into the top of the PDA and others Bluetooth to the PDA from remote. Prices for an entire system range from $695 up, depending on PDA and software. Ours include a custom mount and power. Instead of aviaiton software we can sell street mapping software.

You will want to have bike power available if you can. The PDA only runs about 2 hours on its internal batteries form a full charge.

There are a bunch of street mapping applications available from Microsoft, Delorme, Mapopolis and Destinator. We sell the latter. It includes all of North America. In general they all have pretty good mapping, sliding map, zooming, etc. Don't expect much from the routing engines as they don't see to be as smart as we are. For example, a trip from Chicaog to Phoenix might go through St. Louis (to see the in-laws....). You have to do this in two trips because the software will prolly want to take you through Omaha. You get the idea.

Otherwise, I'd give some though to a clear flexible cover so the grime doesn't get on it. I know they're available.. we just don't sell them. (not much road grime at 9,000' )

Of course, there are the self-contained units from Garmin and Magellan. Good units too. Personally, I think their user interfaces are clumsy but then touch screens are easier for me anyway. Too much button pressing otherwise. Prices start about the same point but you'll probably find black and white screens in that range where the PDA is color.

Hope that helps. Safe riding. And DONT try to operate any of them while you're moving. yikes.

I use my IPAQ 4150 with the on course GPS receiver.

I use the TomTom software for PDA's. I had the PDA for almost 2 years now. I only had to spend $100 bucks for the GPS receiver.
Waiting for the ram mounts to arrive to put it on the bike. But it works great when I'm walking or in the car.

Rudy,
I recently purchased the iWay500. I looked at the iWay350 but I think that one may not be waterproof. I read a lot of stuff and did a lot of comparison shopping before I made my purchase. I got the iWay500 for $600 out the door and then there was a $100 rebate, so it ended up costing $500. It came with all mounting hardware, but I did pick up a metal ball mount for $8 at the motorcycle show to replace the quick release plasic one that came with the unit. I haven't wired it up yet, but I think it looks really good on the bike. I was a little worried that it would look bad, given it's size, but it really fits the lines of the bike well and appears to be very solid.

I received a reply from Lowrance regarding the Iway 350c, asking whether it was weatherproof or not:

Thank you for your interest in the Iway 350C. It is ruggedized and shock resistant but it is not waterproof. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

I replied back and suggested that they remove the statement in the manual that suggests it's OK to install on a boat or a motorcycle, or they might have to warrant failures when people start trying to use them in those environments. (Nothing in the manual says not to get it wet, either)

Went with the Garmin GPSMAP 276C+ and RAM mount on my 1800. I put some plastic tubing around the U-bolt to protect the chrome and a rubber pad under the ball mount for the same reason.

Good sunlight visability and fast on the recompute. Battery time is around 5 hours so I need to add a power connection for long rides. Gives a wealth of info and alternatives. Good-sized display that won't distract from the scenery yet gives easy directions (text and voice) and plenty of lead time.

Whichever model you get, make sure it has lots of memory and that you can download maps, routes, waypoints and other details from your PC. Highest detail for a long route'll eat up 64+MB in no time.

Rudy,

I purchased the iway500 for $603 (no shipping, no tax) at:
www.shipdog.com (http://www.shipdog.com)

iWay had a $100 rebate offer ($603-$100) which is what tempted me to get off the fence and pull the trigger! I wouldn't be surprized, the way prices drop, if you couldn't find one around this price by the time it's riding season.

Last year I used my old Garmin III plus (small, b/w display) and I love having a GPS on the bike, but it's just a little too small. Wouldn't want to do something stupid and run off the road  !

I'll be looking for ya this year at one of the many rides!

There is a refurbished Garmin 2610 for sale on the For Sale board at www.gl1800riders.com (http://www.gl1800riders.com) at $450 OBO. I have that same unit and it is GREAT!

I use the GARMIN GPSMAP60CS. It's small but not too small, color screen and easy to use menu. I've got mine mounted to a RAM mount and hardwired to the battery.

Works like a charm.

I've been wanting a moving map GPS that I can strap to my forearm.

I don't care about a color screen, I just want something waterproof that will not mess wit hthe lines of my bike.

Doug,

I have the 276c also and IMHO think it's the one of the best GPS's out there. I have several GPS's and the 276c is hands-down my favorite. I was wondering if you had any pics of it mounted on your scoot?
