View Full Version : Mysterious Origami by Microsoft to take on iPod

good bye Ipod
Microsoft is good for starting a lot of stuff but never finishing it. They will bring stuff out then drop it and strand it. They start many races but never finish them. Just my opinion.

Did I miss something? or did that give absolutely no info at all?
Microsoft would have to put out something pretty intriguing in order to compete with the ipod. Think about how much competition there is in the MP3 Player market, and then realize that Ipod owns about 90% of the market share.
In my opinion, the only thing microsoft could put out that could possibly compete would be a combination Ipod/pocket PC with a 60GB Internal Hard Drive and GPS... something that would REALLY replace all other portable electronics.
Until that happens, I'd say Ipod is here to stay.

Yep... Microsoft is notorious for rolling out stuff half-baked, then letting us sort out the kinks in the marketplace. Or, they buy out some small software company with a great idea... And then never properly support it or continue development. I doubt they will even put a dent in iPod sales!

Kinda big to compete with iPod. I'd think their competition might be casual laptop WiFi web users.

Much like the Playstation2 was killed off by the XBOX...owaitnevermind, it is more like the iPod being killed of by Creative's Zen...umm never mind that either.
At this point the Imminent Death of the iPod has been announced so many times, it isn't too much of a surprise that we'd get some Microsoft shills pimping an iPod killer. iPod will be replaced at some point by something, it is highly unlikely that that something is Microsoft's Origami. About the only successful hardware products that came out of Redmond are mice and perhaps keyboards.

I don't think it's really an ipod killer. It will be priced around $1,000 bucks while the IPOD will continue to come down. It looks like a windows ce device - like the HP jornada - on roids.

I carry the Motorola MPX220.
It freaks people out to see Windows running on a cell phone.
If you've never had a phone with bluetooth, you're missing out!

I'm not certain they intend to build this, or if it's intended to be something like the Pocket PC.

MDA smartphone specs...
Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition with integrated 802.11g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2, 1.3-megapixel camera, side slide-out keyboard, TI OMAP 200MHz processor, 128 MB ROM, and 2.8-inch QVGA 240x320 display.
Highlights Windows Mobile 5.0; integrated Bluetooth 2 and 802.11g radios; well designed thumb-keyboard; loud stereo speakers; standard mini-SD port <1gb card>
MSN chat - activesync to exchange - super attachment handling - and my favorite an XM tuner 3rd party app that works over GPRS or wifi -
Whomever controls the apps - wins.

Sorry Ric
The Origami is not meant to be an Ipod replacement. It is a smaller form of laptop with touchscreen instaed of keyboard. Or a pda with a much bigger hard drive. The size and battery life will make it difficult to market. To big to fit in your pocket.
Your Anti Apple bias is showing again
