Is a vertical plate legal?

Has anyone with a vertically mounted lisc. plate had any problems getting through inspection? Getting ready to cut off the original plate mount, and want to make sure I am not making a mistake. Thanks

I know it differs state to state. I have a friend that told me when a cop looks at your plate, and he has to tilt his head to read it, you could....COULD get a ticket if the cop is being a bung hole that day.

There is also the law that it must be illuminated to light up the plate.
