Anyone know how much 8mb of memory actually does for you when you buy the MetroGuide North America DVD?
I assume 8mb won't get you the entire US, but I need an idea on how much you could download to the Garmin Rino 120 which only has 8mb of memory.

CasperVTX,
I use CitySelect, not Metroguide, but assuming they’re similar…
The entire Kansas City/Overland Park/Olathe area is 7.8 MB of map data. KC to Topeka (via I-70 or nearby roads) puts you at 7.2 MB. KC to St Louis, including the road data and detailed info for both cities, puts you at 17.2MB.
If you’re going to use your Rhino for day trips, it should be fine. If you’re looking to do cross country trips, you’ll probably want to go with a unit that has more memory (or better yet, removable memory). I’ve got a Garmin GPS V that’s works well for me - 19MB of storage, which is usually enough to hold enough info for a day’s worth of long driving, but if I’m going to be passing through several large cities, I’ll sometimes run out of room even then.
Hope this helps.

That helps a lot. Thanks.
I guess I'll look into more memory.

You are looking at a metro region - not a state. I have heard that a good rule of thumb is 1MB for about every million people in the population. 8Mb (eTrex Legend) is good enough around the Atlanta area, but not too much further. The 128Mb on my i3 holds seven states with a bit to spare. Enjoy, the POIs are awesome!

What kind of memory does it take? CF? SD?
I have a 128MB CF that I'd let go cheap.

Thanks, but the Rino's have memory cards that they say can't be switched out. They may actually have a regular card in there, but the Rino 120 and 130 are waterproof so if I crack it open to check, it'll not only void the warranty, but it'll probably no longer be waterproof. I'd definately take you up on that if I could, but I want the 120 or 130 for the walkie capability along with the way it can transmit your position to another user within a few miles or so.
I thought about buying a 120 and upgrading the memory, but the memory can't be swapped, so that's why I was looking at the bigger memory Rino 130 with 24mb.
Garmin's repair facility is actually about 45 minutes from me. I was going to see if they sell refurbished down there.

I've heard a lot of people with the garmin 2610 say you basically need a 1G card to whole the entire us roadmap with all the metro stuff.

I'd say go for it. I have a few Garmin's. A couple of them are the same model. The 'new' one is starting to flake out on me while the 'referb' (that I abuse) is still holding up.
