They're both great seats, espeacially compared to stock. I've got the Mustang and have been very satisfied from Day One. Whichever one you get, make sure you get the Riders Backrest option. The backrest makes a world of difference on long rides.
Some know I ride pretty long distances. I have an ultimate lowrider, never been on a mustang, miles are irrelevant. For me distance is determined by sleepiness and whether I want to ride at night when there may be big animals around, never by seat comfort. On my recent Alaska ride I did an IBA SaddleSore 2000, minimum of 2000 miles in less than 48 hours. I did 1200 the 1st day and 965 the second.
Something new I learned coming back from Alaska, I've always been a proponent of backrests having "had" an ultimate backrest. In the Yukon at a gas station I removed the backrest in order to take off the seat rain cover for the Ultimate, probably laid it on top of the crate on the back of the bike and rode away. Four hours later, an hour after another gas fill, I realized I didn't have a backrest anymore. I decided an 8 hour roundtrip with no guarantee of finding it was not worth the effort. I later called the gas station with no luck. Anyway, I rode from the Yukon to NE Pa without a backrest. It made "zero" difference to me. I won't be replacing it. Prior I always thought it was important. It could be because I have Phat 3X risers and they position the grips perfectly for me.
Gotta ask your butt !!! I've had three: Ultimate mid rider (softest ) .... Mustang (Firm ) ..... Corbin classic (Very Firm ) ...... If you are tall the Mustang for the C model will put you closer to the tank. The Ultimate & Corbin are about the same distance as stock ...... AGAIN this is on a C model ! The R & S model are a little different . For me personally the firmer seats allow me to ride longer without having to squirm around on the seat. Pure comfort goes to the Ultimate which is like sitting in a recliner! All this being said .... I love my Corbin !!! ............ Rod
I've had stock, stock w/backrest, Mustang w/o backreset, & Ultimate Lowrider w/backrest. Kept the Ultimate for the last 18k miles.
I would suggest you find someone local with non-stock and see if they'll let ya do a butt-test.
The butt don't lie. And all butts are different.

I am very impressed with the maps showing where you've ridden! So when are you going to get to Hawaii? How long and how many different bikes accomplished this task?
I had the Ultimate on my Shadow and I'm thinking about getting one for my VTX 1300T also. I am short (5'-2") and I've read that the low rider lowers the seat 1", which for me would make a big difference because I can't stand flat footed with this bike with the stock seat.
I am torn whether to get the backrest or not. I've never experienced back pain from riding my Shadow which has a similat stock seat to the VTX so I also question whether the backrest is required for me. A friend of mine has one on his Yamaha and likes it but I found it was hard to swing my leg over it even when it was down.
The Ultimate low rider because it is 1" lower also looks like it automatically gives you a bit more lower back support just because of how it is constructed. At least that is what it appears to do so on the photos I've seen of it.
I was hoping that the Ultimate passenger seat I bought for my Shadow would fit the VTX but it looks like you have to buy both the rider and passenger seat from Ultimate if you want to have both on the bike. I suspect they are often the same seat with just different brackets.
ENDURO obviously knows what he is talking about. Almost 2200 miles in 2 days and still have a butt is a testament. (By the way... thanks for the updates on your last journey!)
I prefer the ultimate. Best seat I've ever owned, rode for 5 days straight last year through all kinds of bad weather and I was comfortable the whole way!
Don't want to hijack thread so I'll keep it short. No plans for Hawaii but if I ever get back there I'll be compelled to rent a bike. 46 states and all the 7 provinces were with the X over the last 13 months. The other 3 states, Ca, Az, and Nv, and including Baja were with a 74 DT360 Yamaha Enduro while stationed at 29 palms Ca. There were other bikes in between that also rode some of those states, but again in the last 13 months the x did 46 plus 7 provinces.
My "GREAT" DT (on the right below) along with a friends DT250 in Baja. Shortly after the pic my friend's bottle of injection oil hit his rear tire and exploded over everything.
I just bought a mustang for my 06 retro. Have about 400 miles on it. The wife loves it. I was not to impressed at first, but after a couple hundred miles, it seemed to get much better.
The Mustang seats are good, but the Ultimate seats ae just that - Ultimate! They are so much more comfortable than the stock seats.
I've ridden 500 miles in a day without my butt hurting.
I'm totally satisfied with the Ultimates on my 07 VTX 1300S.
I strongly suggest you get the driver backrest whatever you choose.
I tried for about a year to find Utimate seats used (trying to save a few bucks), but once people get them, they seldom sell them unless they are selling their bike. So I ordered the four piece set new. Got them in about a week or so.
they are not called ULTIMATE for nothing! I have a Midrider w backrest and I LOVE it, I also have a C&C seat (sig pic) and it does not compare, I have tried a mustang, a Corbin, and even a Diamond custom seat, none hold a candle to my Ultimate, I'm not a huge fan of the looks of Ultimate but my butt sure likes it!
True fact - I have showed two that had the Mustang seat my Ultimate Lowrider and they both sold their Mustang sears and replaced them with Ultimate's. One of them dose a lot of cross country riding with over 70k on his bike.
