I am planning to install a trailer hitch on my VTX 1800T.
So far the best one I have found is the Hitchdoc Model #15480 http://www.hitchdoc.com/ especialy made for the VTX 1300, and 1800 .
I need to know if it will fit with the car tire before I order it.
If someone knows of a better option I will appreciate the input.
Home made stuff will please me too.
Thanks
Hopefully someone here that has that hitch will chime in and help you out. I tried to see if that was a hidden hitch under the fender or outside but didn't see a pic of it. I would imagine that if it is under the fender hitch, it would be close or no go. Outside the fender would not be an issue I think. Good Luck.
Hitchdoc and Hitch USA both mount outside the fender and should not pose a problem with tire size.
I have a Dauntless hidden hitch that mounts under the fender and the stock tire just barely fits.
Go to my albums and look at the one titled "Recent Version". There are some pics of the Hitchdoc. The vertical receiver can be removed by pulling a pin to get rid of the ball when not needed.I've used this for years and many thousands of miles with no issues.
I bought a hidden hitch last summer, and ended up taking it off and putting a Hitch Doc hitch on. I picked up my daughter in Sioux Falls and we took off on the X for Salt Lake City. About 200 miles down the road I saw the rear tire was rubbing on the hitch just a bit. We limped to Rapid City and if I'd have been home with my shop tools I probably could have made the hitch work. As it was we were limited on time, and I ordered a Hitch Doc hitch overnighted and switched them out. If I could have ground off the welded nuts on the inside of the frame rail, it would have allowed the hidden hitch to spread about a 1/4 inch on both sides. To me that simply is not enough clearance. My original intent was to have a hitch that did not show outside the fender, but I'm used to the Hitch Doc, and the chrome strip against the fender actually looks nice enough and it isn't going to rub on the tire, ever. I decided that safety was number one and I did not want to risk blowing a sidewall out while my daughter was a passenger, and we were pulling a trailer at 75-80 mph. The Hitch Doc hitch clears the fender enough and is stiff enough that it will never make contact with the fender. We continued on our trip with the same tire, as it barely touched the sidewall, just enough so I knew we had a problem brewing. One more thing with the Hitch Doc hitch, you can take up the free play in the receiver with a built in adjustment bolt that totally makes it solid, which my first hidden hitch did not have. That eliminated quite a bit of clanking noise when going over railroad tracks or small bumps at low speeds. We made 2,665 unforgettable miles between Dad and daughter, and we both lived to tell about it. That's my 2 cents worth. Hopefully you can see the hitch in the pics. Good luck.
Here is one on my C model....................with a CT.
