I really screwed up when I was in a big hurry to adjust my valve and go riding. Turned the crank clockwise to line the RT & FT marks. Didn't realize what I had done until I started the bike. Does anyone know how to correct the chain tensioners? Did I do any damage? Honda repair manual doesn't mention this problem or how to correct it.
What's the problem with the bike? Usually after a botched valve adjustment, the valve is too tight or too loose and you can hear it flapping. Can you not just readjust it?
I wouldn't think chain tensioners would be effected. Just don't turn the engine backward if you miss the timing mark. The crank will turn, but the slop in the chain won't turn the cam.
Shallow spark plug out of both cylinders, put your thumb over the front jug spark plug hole. Bar the engine clockwise (viewed from right side) until you feel compression. Now, get where you can see the FT and index mark and continue turning clockwise until they align. Do all the valves on the front cylinder. Repeat this process for the rear cylinder (using the RT mark).
All went well adjusting the 1800C valves. The #2 cylinder exhaust valve was loose. Adjusted that exhaust valve and checked all the others. They are now all on the money. Reading all the hyp about turning the crank counter clockwise really scared the crap out of me. Only 15,000 miles on the 2002 C I bought new. Would have really ruined my day if I damaged the valves.
Anyway, thanks all for the comments. See you again on the Tech Board.

Just as a double check I always do one cylinder then do a full rotation, align the marks and do that cylinder again.... If the check on the cylinder doesn't match the previous check/adjustment I do it again (adjusting if necessary) until I get identical consecutive checks.
I would go with the dealer at the 90 per unless I personally knew the non-dealer charging 60 per hr. Don't see it taking 2 hrs.. More like 3 to 4 hrs. So be prepared for the extra charges for more time, and extra 1 or 2 hrs.
my dealer here in NC quoted me 325. I decided to do it myself and last week, I adjusted valves first time. Well, it didn't go well and I messed it up. It took me 7 hrs.
Today, I took it apart and adjusted 3 intake and both exhaust within 3 hours and I triple checked it. Drove about 20 miles and it felt good. I am so proud of myself
Ya, first time is the learning curve and seems to take forever. After that it's a breeze. Just have to read the instructions closely and double check the results. Never do something like adjusting the valves when you are in a hurry to go riding. It never fails, something goes wrong like in my case.

:agree:I too always do at least 2 checks with a full rotation in between. I have 71,000 miles on my bike and have done the valve check every 8,000 miles as recommended in the service manual. That means I have now done 8 valve checks and coming up on number 9 here soon. The first valve check took me about 4 hours and it now takes me about 2 hours which includes laying out all the tools before I start so I don't have to go searching through the tool box in the middle of the job. Be sure to always start with a cold engine. Honda recommends the engine temperature be below 90 degrees which is sometimes hard to achieve here in Texas.
well i just had mine done at a reputable shop in rome,ga for 165 they dont quote hrs just a set rate .droped it off one afternoon they said it would be a cpl days eventhough they had told me overnight just 3 days prior, they just had a lot of unexpected work droped off on them overnight . i wasnt mad but when Trae remembered telling me overnight he stayed late and not only adjusted valves but cleaned a bucketfull of dirtdauber nest from under tank and seat and cleaned her back up for me.not all small independent shops are crooked.but i wouldnt expect to get them done much cheaper you do get what you pay for.
