Those are seriously expensive grille guards for Commercial trucks. Grille guard, cow catcher, etc.....http://www.herd.com/ They work quite well as you can see.
When I was running long haul in the mid 90's I was up in Oregon (or maybe Wash) I was fueling up and a Pete (just like the one pictured) pulled up in the next bay. There was head imprint in the grill, fender was bent back, battery box under the door was pushed back and rear fender was gone. The rest of the truck was flawless.
I asked him what he hit. "A Moose.... Wana see it?".. WHAT!? We walked to the trailer and there it was froozen, Left antlers gone, as was most of is face.
"The money I save eating this thing will help pay for my truck" I asked him how in the world did he get it in there... He said he hooked chains to the hinges with a com-along, dragged it into the truck, got it swinging with the help of some passer byes and released it in mid swing.
Those things are big... Even bigger when you are looking up at one.
When I worked as a welder down in Texas (eons ago), we built similar guards for the front of the trucks hauling pipe and heavy oil field equipment (you don't slam on brakes carry either one of those!) .. anyway, we made them out of 4", 6" and 10" drill pipe.... no chrome, but worked great. You should see what a black angus cow will do to a truck without a grill guard!
After the 1700mi Scoot tour from Tampa to Mpls - and seeing every 10 mile marker another Hit by Semi's -
That's a .5mil in no time by 60 trucks.
Semi bumpers are almost worthless - even the steel ones we had on the Macks -
the only attach point is the frame rail ends near the center. The ends, just fold into the tires.
Cow catchers to survive a hit - I'm sure are spendy - but huge insurance.
Should almost be snowplow shaped to the side - like the old Steam trains.
