Well I can only whine this morning.

I didn't go to Daytona this past weekend.

Thursday it was raining, Friday wasn't much better in Atlanta.

So I stayed home.

Just found this post. Wish I had seen it earlier.

I rode down from NE Pa. Left home on Tuesday about 5pm in 38 degrees. It was pretty uncomfortable for the first 3 hours to Harrisburg, then to DC it was cold but endurable, going on arriving at Rocky Mount NC about 1am I could relax in the seat a little by then and only stopped because I was tired, 520 miles.

Left Rocky Mount in a cool rain at 8am, it rained hard off and on until about 4pm to the Florida border. At that point it got real hot real quick! Couldn't get off 95 quick enough to get out of the rain gear. Arrived Wednesday at my daughter's about 7:30pm 2 hours west of Daytona near Lakeland. Total trip down 1240 miles.

Washed and waxed off all the road grime on Thursday. Relaxed on Friday. And enjoyed the sights and sound of Daytona on Saturday. Here is a link to a few of the pics. I was surprised at the number of older riders and also at the number of women drivers. http://picasaweb.google.com/tundragr...etoberfest2009#

Left for home about 7:30am Monday with record low temps of 48 degrees in Florida. Did some visiting on the way up in southern North Carolina making it to Greensboro around 10pm. My bike was under a cover but the cars were all covered with frost Tuesday morning, heard at breakfast it was 28. I waited until 9 to leave as things warmed up a little by then. Did some more visiting and made it home about 11:30pm in the mid 40s. With the side trips for visiting the distance coming home was 1430 miles.

Total miles were 2963. It was cool to cold for most of the trip with about 8 hours of pretty hard rain but I really enjoyed it. If possible I'll do it again next year. A lot of it has to do with the weather getting out of here and the expected weather coming home. While I was in Florida we got 4.5 inches of snow here but it was melted by the time I came back. I've done this trip to my daughter's in the summer too but then it is the heat that kills me more than the cold. Just gotta love getting stuck in stopped traffic in Orlando on Rt. 4, facing west into the sun with 95 degrees and 100% humidity, the heat coming up from the engine, and the heat coming off the road. Face and arms are already "well done" by that point in the trip.

Really haven't spent enough time there to leave an impression either way. My daughter graduated from Southeastern, I visited her once for a couple days and then the graduation there. Just seemed like a normal big town/small city to me.

Now she lives near Winter Haven and I am much more familiar with that area and I like it there. Coming and going is always towards the Orlando side for me. I rode down last year when she was thinking about buying a bike (never did). I remember going to a number of big bike shops in Lakeland (big at least compared to where I live) and a number of smaller used shops. Couldn't tell you the names though. I wouldn't mind living there except I really have an aversion to the heat.
