Question Oil Choice

I have been using synthetic oil in my 03 vtx1800 because I was told it was better than regular oil. Now I am being told by the bike mechanic that using synthetic in my vtx is a bad idea. He says it cases clutch wear. Has anyone had any experience with this? Should I change to another oil or change to another mechanic?

You should PM Chicago-Spike. He is an Amsoil Dealer.

Some types of oil can make the clutch slip but AMSOIL will not!!! The mechanic may be right depending on the type of oil used.

Maybe he is confused with the engergy conserving oil grades with the synthetic oil which is a blended base oil with polymer. The conserving oil grades is specially for cars it has additives which can cause clutch slippage in your motorbike trany.
Just if you like to spent the money buy senthetic oil. I'm using the Castrol special made for Motorcycle specially with the gearbox sharing the same oil with the engine. Like our best bike the VTX

He's talking about oil with energy concerving additives, trust Amsoil it's the best.

I believe the additive is molybdenum. If you use synthetic oil with that additive, it may be too slippery and cause your wet clutch to slip. Otherwise the other full synthetics are proven to be better oils for our engines and transmissions. It may be more complicated than that, but when I was researching oil information, that was the conclusion I drew. I use Amsoil and found one of the immediate differences was that shifting was smoother.

Default Synthetic oil

I have an 1800 and use the Mobil 1 for MOTOR CYCLES and it works great. Smooth clutch, smooth shifting ,and I can go longer between changes.

Default Castrol Synth..5w-50w

I have always tried to use Castrol Synth 5w-50w. At times I use 10w-40w. With either, I have had absolutely NO problem with any kind of slipping. I ride a 04 VTX 1300 C with several mods.

I don't think so and haven't heard of anyone having a problem doing it at the 600 mile service...but I get the Honda oil at a discount and would still change it every 3500-4500 miles regardless if it was synthetic...so the extra $$ of synthetic to me wasn't worth it.

If you're using AMSOIL full synth, technically, its good for much more than 5000 miles. Theoretically good for 10k, but my heart can't bear to take the risk.

My Honda Mechanic has been wrenching on Hondas for 30+ years.

I asked him what to run in my VTX when I bought it new.

He said:

Use the Dino Oil thats in it
Change it at 600mi to another batch of Dino Oil
Once you hit 2,500 to 3,000 miles change oil and filter, and go to Amsoil 10w-40 Motorcycle Oil from there on out.
Change your filter at 4,000 miles, re-top it off with Amsoil, then change both oil and filter at 8,000 miles.

I asked what he used in his personal bike (Gold Wing).

He said "Oh, I only use Amsoil in my Bike, my Truck, my RV, my Wife's Car, and my Bike.. Absolutely, hands down, the best oil on the market."

Again, the guy has been wrenching Hondas for a dealership for 30+ years.

I went with his advice.

Oil selection is not difficult. if the bottle says energy conserving in the circle trade mark, do not use it in wet clutch motor. if it doesnt say energy conserving it is ok to use in a wet clutch motor. either syn or mineral. it is the energy conserving additive that creates a poss clutch issue. now go read all the propaganda reports and get yourself confused, but it is that simple.

Default Oil

GN4 Honda oil seems to be working fine for me. Changed every 4000 miles. 2002 C VTX with 110,000+ miles so far, no leaks and no smoke.
