Hello Fellow VTX Cruisers

My name is John. I just upgraded from a 2009 Shadow Spirit to a 2002 VTX 1800. I am in the North Texas area. Keep me posted on any rides. Question. The day I bought the bike I was cruising at about 70 on the freeway and the bike just stalled. I coasted the the side and fired it back up. I got about another 10 miles. Same thing. This time it would fire up, but would not idle and die. I let it sit for awhile, checked the gas and a few other things. All seemed fine. Fired right up when I tried. Road her home about 10 miles away keeping RPMs high. Next day took her out. Never stalled, in third gear and fourth would occasionally feel little lurches while cruising. Any thoughts?

Welcome from just north of DFW.

I ride a 1300 so I can only give general thoughts.

My first thought would be to check the quality of the fuel. There is a good chance it had been sitting for a long while before you bought it. Second since you have a fuel pump, maybe it has gone bad.

If you can keep it running add a double dose (20 oz or so) of Chevron Techron Concentrate to the tank. I have been advised by very knowledge techs that it works great on fuel systems.

Go over to the 1800 board and I am sure someone there will be more help.

Welcome aboard from San Antonio, Texas! Check your fuel pressure regulator. The earlier VTX 1800s had a known issue with them.

Welcome from Central Texas. Enjoy the Ride here on the Forum and on the Road.

The place to start is the Ground Fix. Bad grounds can cause weird problems to go away. Then go thru the rest of of the How To forum for other upgrades and mods.

I also recommend BareAssChoppers site. Here's a direct quote from the site: "Ask someone on a forum what could be causing a problem on your bike and 9 times out of 10 the first thing asked will be Have you done the ground fix?! Fouling plugs, trouble starting, intermittent ECU error codes, rough idle, one cylinder misfiring? All these and more can be solved by the ground fix."

I'm gonna hit the highway like a battering ram, on a silver-black PHANTOM bike!

How did your shadow run? Is it really an upgrade if your new bike has trouble before you get home? I'm betting you'll get it figured out, the X is a really good bike but you'll be hard pressed to find a better bike than a shadow.

John - welcome to the VTXOA!

My nephew had a 2006 1100 spirit. Only ever had one problem--fuel pump died.

Check battery cables at battery, they tend to loosen from vibration.
Ground Fix - do it.

I would pop open a few connectors to inspect and spray some contact cleaner on the pins.
Ignition Switch 4 pin natural color connector and the 2 pin connector near the Starter Relay in the left side cover where the 30 amp main fuses are hidden.

Bare has great info on his site.

There is a PDF in the VTXOA Step by Step board to clean and lube the Starter Switch.
Dirt and grime and old grease plus continuous headlight current make this more troublesome than it should be.

TS switch also has a PDF for clean and lube.
