You would have to ask him that as it was his experience not mine. It was posed by some that the nail coming out the side wouldn't have sealed. Maybe no, maybe yes. As it came up through the center, it pierced the layer of R-O as it proceeded to the sidewall. it could, could, have, then put a small bit on the inside of the sidewall as the point exited the tire, thus creating a seal. Not a good one, but just enough. 99 times out of 100 this might not have happened, but maybe, just this one time.
