Speedometer and tripmeter not displaying

Hey fellas. Long time.

My 1800R has languished about for the better part of the past 20 months merely due to my frustration and neglect over the lack of power supply (?) to the dash. I have resisted riding and adding more miles while the odo is out to lunch as I rely on the odometer reading for service intervals, ballpark of remaining gas in tank, and of course because I generally like to know the true total mileage the bike has accumulated.

I’m not particularly savvy at electrical troubleshooting. I initially checked the three 30A fuses tucked away behind the left side cover and they looked okay.

So then I suspected the speed sensor may have failed. I went ahead and replaced it; that solved nothing.

Figured what the heck. Odds must be it’s the speedo assembly itself that is defective. Replaced that; same lifeless result as the one it replaced.

None of the dash lights illuminate, either, other than the blue high beam light.

So I’ve gotten nowhere fast solving this by throwing new parts at the bike other than ruling out the speed sensor and the speedo assembly.

Any ideas where else to check?

Black/Brown wire is +12v to speedo and backlights

Green/Black is the Speedo Ground ONLY and goes to the Common Electronics Ground on the Front Ignition coil bolt.

Green is the Common wire for the led backlights and some led indicators.

Check +12v power at the connectors to BOTH ground wires.
High beam lights up HB led and it uses normal Green wire Ground.

A schematic with info.

Youíre amazing, Hans. Very helpful. Iíll lift the tank and have a look with that info when I get some more time.

Good points, Chuck, for models Ď04 and newer.

Thanks guys.

I drained the old fuel from the tank today and added a fresh gallon and went for a spin just before sunset and the VTX passion is renewed. What a machine!
