I have the VTXExhaust.com mod on my 1800N. It made it sound more like a classic muscle car and less like a Singer sewing machine. I did the Pair Valve/Air Box mod as well.

The only issue I had is that until I put the Cobra FI2000R controller on, was constant popping on deceleration. With the programmer, I have no more popping and am still getting an average of 40 mpg. I did run some 4" long baffles from J&P for a while, since the newly modded output pipe is a standard larger size. I didn't run them long as it wasn't the sound that I was after.

Best of luck! You have already made the right decision by riding a VTX.

I have a 1800c with stock unmodified exhaust. I found another stock c exhaust and am in the process of removing the cat from the front of the muffler. so far I half about half of it removed. I was suprised to find it is at least 6" long. Will take some pics of before, during and after so you can see the design of the muffler which is what I was curious about...I dont want to drill out the back of the muffler. I suspect removing the cat will give a noticeable increase in volume but not be too loud. I am no engineer. The Honda engineers that designed this muffler know more about sonic waves, reversion, backpressure, etc. than I do. I am sure they used a high flow catalytic converter since it is so long. I expect to enhance the stock sound without making it sound crappy. The beauty of having another stock muffler to work on is if I destroy the muffler or make it sound crappy I can always put the original back on lol I will try to find a db meter so I can record the actual difference at idle and mid rpm.

I believe someone installed a straight through glass pack muffler on a C exhaust once.
Tractor mufflers were used on another VTX once.

about an inch past the catalyic converter is a plate that looks like a shower drain. Once I get all the cat out I will be able to see of there is a tube connected to it. I think the effect of removing the cat from the muffler will be like deleting the resonator from your oem exhaust on your truck. Slightly more volume without a change in tone.

Some cat systems are restrictive.
Kitchen sink basket strainer has been used in exhaust pipes as baffles..
Bar strainers are slightly smaller.
