Question Won't start without a screwdriver

Hello everyone,

I need some help on figuring out why my 2002 1800 won't start with the push button but when I touch the pos and neg with a screwdriver it cracks up like it's really to roll out the garage.

See pics below.

Thanks for the advice.

Let's correct something>> the screwdriver is bridging the +12volts from the Battery to the "+" cable going to the Starter Motor.

That is NOT the OEM Starter Relay. That is a lawn tractor Starter Rely, many have been used.

Have you done the Starter Switch clean & lube???
It is in the Step by Step section. Rattlebars Starter Switch Mtce.

The Starter Switch "slider/shunt" has two duties:
(1) directs +12v to the headlight when in "Normal" position
(2) directs +12v to the Starter Relay when the Starter Switch is activated, headlight goes Off, Starter relay is activated.

Do the clean and lube first...
Dust and grease creates a poor connection, headlight high current warms up things.
Sometimes a little plastic has to be trimmed due to the heat generated.

After the Clean & Lube, than try the Starter Switch.

The Starter Switch provides +12v to the Starter Relay trigger terminal, the Ground is from the "Neutral switch" or Kick Stand in UP position.
Cranking in gear would require that the "Clutch switch" to be operated with the KS UP.
Clean, test, analyze.

Hans&Feet, thank you for that detailed information. No, I have not done the starter clean and lube, I don't even know what that is. However, I will try that before I take it to the shop, I'm just scared that I don't know what I'm doing and I'm afraid that I'll mess something up.

Secondly, where do I find this Step by Step section and Rattlebars Starter Switch Mtce.? Is there a pdf or youtube video that can show me what I'm getting into?

Above is a list of all the various boards on this site and what should and should not be posted on them. On that list you will find the "How To;Step-by-Step" board

There is a PDF in the Step by Step board.
Chicago-Spike gave you a link to all the boards.
Click on the link C-Spike provided.

The alternate method is to drill down from "FORUM" and you will see "VTXOA Message Boards",
click on it or slide the cursor over to the right and select the board.
Step by Step opens with a common section, 1300 and 1800.
Navigate to get familiar with the forum!

Then the two segregated sub-boards 1300 or 1800.

You have to open the right side handlebar clam-shell to remove the switch.
Honda does not sell the switch.
You have to buy the entire switch housing for at least $65 that is why we clean and lube.
Part #5 on this parts fiche...
https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/ho...andle-switch-1

Anyway I added the PDF to this thread.
Caution notice>> two steel balls with one side on a spring.. Apparently some have gone airborne... A tarp or a bed sheet to help contain the pieces.
Unscrew and remove the switch, disconnect the front brake switch wires. Pull it out carefully. Short plastic tangs have to be pulled back slightly to dis-engage
the cover with the wires. Have fun!

Look, I bought my 2006 VTX2C and went on YouTube and video did a step by step doing it. I did exactly what was shown and I'm no mechanical genius. I'm surprised you didn't check YouTube when you got the bike. When I buy a vehicle, and I owned a BMW R1200C, Kawasaki Meanstreak, Honda ST1100, Cadillac SRX, Toyota Prius, Dodge Ram 1500, I join a blog catering to each, and watch any YouTube video on each. I change my own motorcycle tires, do my own maintenance by watching how to do it. Do the same.

When my 08 F did this (due to me running the high beams all the time and heated up the metal piece causing it to sink into the plastic base) I was able to get it back into position and making good contact again and all has been good since then. That was about 4 or 5 years ago now.
