Plastic covers beginng to show fractures at the bolt holes

Back in September 2019 I decided to investigate a rattle.
I found a loose screw, removed the speedo cover and discovered some fractures.
The shiny side looks good so I made a batch of epoxy to reinforce the affected ones and being slightly proactive
I added epoxy around the good mounting hole. I added a tape layer at the mounting screws and the speedo is quiet..

10/27/2019 I noticed a collection of oil drops under my X.
At a 6 minute fuel stop no drops, and no drops when I got home to investigate,
The dust/dirt has been collecting, but no fresh oil drops. (Probably coolant pump/crankcase oil seal)
I wiped all I could from underneath than decided to pull the side cover.
Loosening the bolts all gave a pop(using T-handle allen from Memphis shades).
The T-handle tool has a lot of flex so nothing should get over-tightened.
Been used many times since 2005.

4 of 5 came off clean, that 5th one had broken pieces.
I had the metal bushing with 1/3 of the plastic attached and a few fragments.
Anyway a repair is being done to the hole and the other mounting holes will be reinforced.

I believe the OEM screws have a shoulder, so over tight should not be an issue.
Are the screws original?

I believe you are right. I think they also should have a plastic washer betwixed the screw head and the plastic. That washer is fairly thin, if replaced with a thicker, off the shelf generic, plastic washer one might also create a problem. Just a thought.

My speedo has the shoulder screws. One plastic washer missing, electrical tape taking its place.
I used electrical tape many years ago to supplement the plastic washers because there was too much clearance(rattle).

Engine left cover has the spacers attached to the cover(except for the one where the blow out happened).

More epoxy procured to build up the mounting bosses on the engine cover.

Thanks!

This is good to know. As the 1800s age we all might be looking at these fixes. Is the 1300 still made? I will have to DuckDuck that.

When you are young you want what everyone else has . . when you are old you want what everyone else had.

It has not dripped anymore.
Oil+dirt at coolant pump weep hole probably the source.
Beats having a pump seal go bad!
