Forty Years Ago, Today....

the nuclear disaster at Three Mile Island destroyed the Unit 2 reactor. Some may quibble with my choice of the word "disaster", since the public was essentially unaffected, but I think it's the right word. The nuclear industry learned a heck of a lot, and undoubtedly the lessons learned about man/machine interface and accident diagnostics have contributed to subsequent safety, but the accident pretty much halted the growth of that particular version of carbon-free power generation.

I live within 15 miles of one and it has been putting out electricity for over 50 years. Don't know what problems they have had, but not much in the news.

It's purely rumor that fish in the Susquehanna downstream have been caught with 3 eyes.

Meanwhile down in Georgia, Vogtle Electric Generating Plant has two operational reactors with two additional units under construction.

A coal fired plant in Rome, GA to be shutdown. Cannot compete with natural gas.

Many, many coal fired plants here in the Carolinas have retired in the past ten years. A few of the biggest and newest (built in late 70s) are being retrofitted to burn natural gas too. I’m not sure if that’s done as a permanent swap, or if the plants will be capable of burning either fuel.

Millstone just last week got it's license renewed for 10 years.

My folks bought a house across the bay in Niantic. For many years,
on cold days we'd go out on the boat & swim in the discharge water. Almost as warm as bathwater.

The only thing I've noticed, I no longer have to turn on the light in the bathroom at night to pee.
My stream is bright luminescent green & lights up the toilet just fine.

I live about 15 miles from a nuclear plant. It's visible from I-40 in Russellville.
