Oxidation could also give a high resistance connection at the battery post.
Put a voltmeter on the battery and see what happens when Ign switch turned on....

I am not aware of a tachometer causing a problem with other controllers.

I believe the 1800C had a tach wire from the rear Ignition coil in the harness.

Most problems are tach needle bouncing....
