Hello Guys and Gals

For some reason my speedometer just stopped working!
All fuses are good / Taillight works all signals work the only indication is the neutral light works intermittent.
connections are all good but I am not sure if I missed something.

Open to any comments, thanks in advance for all the comments/help.

2002 1800 C with 92,000 on the clock when it shut off.

Thanks Archie

Are the trip meters working???
Did you check the 6pin connector in the headlight bucket???
VSS(vehicle speed sensor) gets +12v on the Black/Brown wire>>to speedo.
(speedo/taillight/neutral light/oil pressure light same fuse)
VSS outputs +5v pulses when the rear wheel turns, Pink/Green wire>>to speedo.
VSS has a Green/Black Ground wire on Common electronics ground lug>>to speedo.

The VSS dies on occasion, several per year.
Test for voltage and output...

Neutral indicator switch(a metal probe) when the tip wears the indicator usually starts blinking before
it stops working. I filed/sanded the copper sealing washer several years ago---still working.

Speedo still not working

Thanks Hans for your help.

I did check what you indicated to look for but still not working and power is going to the 2 center pins / pink and green for the speedo.
I did use Dielectric grease and did find a little and I mean little what looks like green corrosion I did clean the pins and still not working.
The taillight works and the fuse is good. And to answer your earlier ? the Odometer does not work and the backligthing does not work, nothing works.

Thanks Archie

I know of one VTX(1300) that had a broken ground wire(Green/Black) at the Common Electronics ground.
Check it carefully.
Measure voltage from the Black/Brown to the Gree/Black..

I'm having the same/similar issue (s) with my 03 1800.
1 - Speedo not working
2 - neutral light comes on until I pull in the clutch... light goes off and the bike shuts down immediately if the stand is down.
As much as I'd rather not, I can live with it shutting off, just have to remember to bring the stand up first....the real PITA is the Speedo.... not to mention the safety concern in the back of my head worrying about it shutting down running on the interstate....

1800 has a few VSS failures every year.
Sometimes only speedo/odometer with a lousy signal and "Limp home" mode
with no signal or a real crappy signal. The gear teeth with the Hall sensor generates pulses,
when the rear wheel turns. Check for pulses at the VSS connector.
VSS outputs +5v pulses(spec), +3v pulses have been recorded.
VSS has a dedicated Green/Black wire to the Common Electronics Ground bolt at Frt Ign coil.

The tip of the neutral switch wears down from contact with the shifter drum.
The movement of the clutch rod pushes shaft & tranny to the right.
My 1300 had a thick copper seal washer, so I sanded/filed it and it has been good for many miles.
