Has anyone painted their engine black? If so, what is the process, how grueling is the process, and was it worth it? I really like the look of the black engine and wondering if it's worth the effort to do it.

It all depends on how you want to do it. I just taped off the fins and anything I didn't want painted, hit it with Duplicolor engine paint, removed the tape and voila. An even easier route would be to skip taping the fins. Some folks polish the fins to a shine, then tape and spray. That's the one that takes 40 hours. Check out tech.vtxoa.com and see the write up on there. It's pretty comprehensive.

yeah, that guy did polsh the fins. I was trying to think what could have taken 40 hours?

As far as the fins go, wouldn't it be easier painting and then polishing after, rather than trying to tape the fins? I would think sanding the paint off would take less time then taping those thin edges.

Think I've got about 10 hours in mine. I didn't polish the fins and don't really plan on it either. Removing the pipes is a must and alot of masking.

Even just doing it all black really brings out the other chrome and such. Looks really good and if prepped well won't flake. :D
