I started prepping tonight, got the carb off and all the chrome engine trim. Washed the motor and scrubbed the fins with scuff pads. Should be able to start sanding tomorrow.

Disconnecting the coolant lines off the carb reminded me that I need to change my coolant. Probably do that while its all apart, too.

This was definitely worth all the work. It took me 5 days working at night after work. I could probably do it in a weekend if I had two full days. It cost about $50. It is alot of work, but man just like Mr VTX wrote in his write up, as soon as you start peeling the tape off the fins, the great feeling just comes over you!

Yes, this is one of those projects that really makes the bike your own, and validates all the time it took to do it. That looks fantastic!

Thanks guys, it turned out great. Took the bike up to Julian this morning, its in the 60's but there is still snow on the ground. It was an awesome day for a ride.

I did the blacked out engine last spring, and like you it took a few nights after work to get to done, and a lot of hours filing,sanding, polishing...etc. I had never even taken my tank off and dove right in head first. I also added my exhaust at the same time. It felt good to do the work myself and has given me a little more confidence to do other things. Now If I could get up the nerve to remove my wheels and paint them...oh well, one thing at a time.

Yep, they are the Kury case covers, I really like them, I have no complaints whatsoever. They fit perfect, great quality, all metal pieces.

Man those wheels look like crap.:roll: Box them up, ship them to me and I will properly dispose of them for you. I will send you my spokes to use till you can find suitable replacements.

Here is mine, I will never do this again..... :banghead:

My suggestion for anyone else, if you do this spend a few bucks on a good air brush, best way to paint in between the fins and not over load the paint! Also, I would not use High Heat engine paint again nor DupliColor! Their paint can suck and the VTX does not get that hot!
