When I had a car accident, I got two estimates and didn't pay a penny. A friend recently had an accident and the local dealership charged $167 for an estimate. Is that normal?

What do various states do regarding sales tax? Do they charge sales tax on labor?

i've never had to pay for an estimate on a vehicle or bike, ever....that doesn't sound right....i would have gone somewhere else. As for the sales tax on labor, i would say yes, at least you do here in NC, and i'd think that holds true everywhere since it is a service.

After my 1300R was wrecked, the dealership said that they would have an estimate fee of $160 something. He said that they have had a ton of people coming in asking for estimates and then after the estimate was done. Would pick up the bike and do the work themselves.

So you have tied up a guy in the shop for a couple of hours doing your estimate and they have to cover his time. Now if you had the work done at their shop, the estimate fee was waved. OR if the bike was totalled by the insurance company the fee was paid by the insurance - as was the deal in my situation.

Just my two cents worth..

You shouldn't have to pay tax on labor - just the parts.
