Hey Dirk!

Finally got into Independence today - from the north after being holed up since Sat night. Wife had to go to Wal-Mart ya know!

Got exciting Saturday. Corps called us to install some covers in the gate tower at Elk City Lake before the lake came up. Shortly after we finished, that platform was under water. It was also a race to get home before all the routes were cut off - I made it via Coffeyville before that route dried up .... not actually dried, but ... awww, you know!

While flooding occurred in Independence, it's really hit Coffeyville hard. We need to keep those folks and those in other flooded areas in our prayers. Actually, I haven't heard of a fatality or flood-related injury in this area. That's really good news!

I was in QSR scout Camp (8 miles North of Sedan) all last week with my son. Camp normally goes til Saturday noon. Friday morning they told us to pack up quickly and get out. The 6 mile road from highway 99 was under water already. We went thru 4-6 inches of water on the 20 mile dirt backroad out. Poor boys, it rained from Tuesday afternoon until we left Friday. I heard a camp counselor say they dumped 12" of water out of their gauge since camp started Sunday morning.

I feel for the folks who are still under water. Here in West Wichita we got 13" of rain in 24 hours on Halloween 1998. My neighborhood was hit pretty hard by a stream that backed up. Luckily, I live on a hill (yes, the one hill in Wichita) people two blocks south had basements full of water.
