I was wearing a beanie helmet yersterday and went to the beach.A cop pulled me over and gave me a warning to get a real dot aproved helmet. He said you need to GO GET a helmet and I dont want to see you riding here again until you do_Or I will give you a ticket for 135.00.25 for the fine and 110.00 for court cost.So I pull away on my bike and he pulls me over 50 ft up the road.I,m thinking what now.He comes up and says I just told you to get a helmet.I said I was going to chopper toyz bike shop to get one.He said no you cant ride any where till you get one.I said you mean so I,m stuck here till I get a new helmet? He said yes and thats your problem you shouldnt have been wearing that helmet in the first place. What azzhole he was.And he also rides in the blue knights motorcycle club for cops.So he then writes me a ticket and bitches me out.I asked him how was i suppose to get a helmet siting on the side of the road.He wouldnt let me get one.And then 3 more cops pulled up.The cop said well now what cha gonna do now boy.If it wasnt for the badge I would have laid him out hard.So I got on the ph and called some of my friends for help. One of them called choper toyz and they delivered a helmet to me road side.DOT approved.I then put the helmet on and rode to chopper toyz to thank them.Today I have to take the dot helmet to the magestriat with my ticket and get it thrown out.I,ll, explian what happened should be no problem.I hope.Any way a fellow rider cop has such a bad attitude.Put on badge become DICK.Must have been a hall moniter in school too little punk.I,ve ridden for yrs no problem with the same type of helmet .Just this one cop. What do you guys think?I,m not down on the police just this jerk.No offense to law enforcement.

do you live in that area?
did you know there was a helmet law?
if there is a helmet law it has to be DOT approved
so you was wrong, you did the crime now do the time.

i hate cops that have to give you a tude because they got beat up every day in high school also, get that from small town local cops around here

i break the law on occasion, nothing too bad mostly un-inspected vehicles but when i get nabbed i just pay the fine and move on

i do agree with the whole attitude thing, its a shame some of them cant act more professional,

I ride with a non DOT helmet and that is my choice. If I was stopped like that, I would do what he said and buy one but I would expect him to allow me to ride to the store to get it. If they stop you for a faulty headlight or anything else, they allow you to drive away to get it fixed. It should be the same with the bike. And as far as his attitude, that would have really pi$$ed me off to no end.

Shoulda had a helmet, instead of having a pretend helmet hoping it would get you a pass. If you're pulled over and found to not have a valid license, should they still let you drive away and assume your going to get it resolved?

let the helmet law argument ensue.

So many law abiding, second guessing, citizens here.

The cop was a dick. Can't blame him for pulling you over I guess, but not letting you drive off until you got a helmet is BS. I'll bet he was peeved off that day about something. I'd hate to think he's a dick like that every day.

I'm not going to get in the debate of "should of known" whatever.....but when the cop said "what cha gonna do now boy" that's a total disrespect.....I'm nobody's "boy"...wearing a badge doesn't give you the right to treat people however you want....having a bad day doesn't excuse it either....If I did that on my job....a pink slip would soon follow...

Maybe it was a bit of miscommunication...

Clearly he meant to give you a break by not writing the ticket the first time. He let you go, but you rode away while still in his view. He probably saw that as a slap in the face. He told you what to do to avoid a ticket and you ignored it.

He's nice enough to let you go initially, then 3 more cops pull up and he tells you "what cha gonna do now boy"?

I think we're missing part of your story... :)

I live in Newbern NC and atlantic beach is about fifty miles away.I ride all the time with that same helmet on.Been thru road blocks got pulled for speeding.Cool cop let me slide.Had cops check my bike out and no problems.Just this one cop decided to be a ass. Before I left he had about 8 more guys pulled over and they all were in the same boat.It was at the beach in a kind of culdisack area. One way in one way out.He was in the middle .I know that you have to wear a helmet.Didnt know you had to have dot approved.Hundreds of guys wear them to rallies and poker runs led by law enforcement. How can they led a toy run if they know hundreds of riders are breaking the law.Tell me that!!!
And like step bill said if you got stopped for a faulty head light they should let you get it fixed. Not strand you where you sit. That one cop out of 15 I was near or passed is the only one that gave tickets out.Chopper toyz saved my day.If your in the moore head area stop in and check out the store .First rate people and a large selection of biker struff. On aside note.Step bill I think I met you on a ride to fayetteville and stoped off to wild wings for a meet and greet. This was last yr some time with dogdoc andc radar.

Your right. I kinda skimmed that part over originally. Cop shoulda specifically said, OK now leave the bike, call someone and get a real helmet. or something of the sort. Instead of baiting him into the ticket.

I like cops (MOL) but it's like most other professions ...

The top 20% carries the lower 80% ...

There's a law ...

He enforced it ...

Ya' get what ya' pay for ... ( ... and he could have been YOUR's and my best friend in High School ... he may have just been instucted/reminded to enforce the law if he wanted to continue to cash his pay check ... )

Sorry about your ticket ..

opinions vary ...

all blessings ...

You knowingly, willingly broke the law by wearing an illegal beanie-lid in the first place...and I'm willing to guess this isn't your first ride with it, just the first time you got stopped with it. You rolled the dice and came up with snake-eyes Partner. This one is squarely on your shoulders, no excuses. Ride safe, ride often. 8)

From your side of it, he sounds like a dick.

However, it is a liability issue. If he had let you ride to away, "to go to chopper toyz", and you had crashed and died.... He could be held liable. Even if you say that YOUR family wouldn't sue, somebody's family would!

Like insurance. Some departments tow vehicles for no insurance. Drivers will say, "I'm gonna get it ASAP!", then turn the corner and T-Bone a school bus full of kids.

If he would have let you ride off with that helmet to get another, and you got into an accident and cracked your skull open because your helmet wasnt DOT approved, it would have fallen on him. He did the right thing. You put yourself in that situation. Yes, you are correct that he should have not spoken to you the way he did. He was only looking out for your safety though.

Ride safe!

OK al I have to go on it what the OP said the cop told him ....

He said you need to GO GET a helmet and I dont want to see you riding here again until you do.
I dunno, was riding off in front of that cop that just gave you the warning about the illegal helmet the wise thing to do. After all he did say " I don't want to see you riding here again until you do so."

Yeah it's easy to " Monday Morning Quarterback ", but I learned long ago to do exactly as a cop asks and if not clear ask for explanation. The side of the road is not the place to argue with a cop, all he has to do is push a button and MORE COPS show up. Get him in court where he has to be civil and respectful.

Cops deal with $hit everyday, and they shouldn't have to.

I know a fool who was arrested for " standing up and sitting down ". He was asked by an officer to " move along " away from an area where a fight was being dealt with. He told the cop, " I ain't going anywhere. ". The cop said " If you don't move within 3 minutes I will arrest you. " So this fool stands up, and sits down and tells the cop " there I moved now what are you going to do? " He was arrested!

Perhaps your attitude was part of the problem?

I was right on board till the end Philly  I couldn't care less if someone wants to ride without a good helmet, or without a seatbelt. That's on them.

What a lot of people don't realize, is that helmet laws and seatbelt laws are not there because the government gives a damn about your safety. It all boils down to money.

Example 1: When traffic fatalities in an area are up, there is a public outcry in general. Funds to that state or city will drop until officials in that area get the fatality numbers back down.

Example 2: If someone becomes disabled due to lack of helmet or seatbelt, their insurance will only carry them for so far, or up until so much $. Then, guess who gets to pay for them to collect disability. Or who has to pay for them to stare at a television and drool through a feeding tube for the next 40 years? The goverenment. I.E. YOU!

I think we are definitely only getting just part of the story. I would like to hear the cops side. I bet its a little different from the one you related. 3 other cops showed up. Why? Just to belittle you. If 3 other cops showed up it sounds like he was maybe having a bit of a problem and thought an arrest was in your immediate future.
