Hi. I am new on here. I've had a vtx1800 for a few years. I have read around online. I am trying to figure out how to get ber mileage, mpgs. I get 30-32. Would different pipes give me better fuel economy? does anyone know ways to get it in the 40s or higher. my system is stock. i do have a fairing. my buddy has the same year and model and a windshield and gets 34 so pretty close. any ideas are helpful. thanks

I get 39-40, sometimes 42 on freeway unless I hammer it above 70 on the freeway. My set up is 2002 Retro with HPP, high flow airbox (guy was in Mich and passed away) and HK 2-1 Xcelerators. In town I get 34-36. 8) #

NSTG8R license on the way!

hammer it above 70 ??? hammer it!!!
Dude that ain't even the speed limit in many places.
Ya, may as well be ridin' Harley :p :p
Hammer, yeah, HAMMER...speed limit in Montana and Wyoming can be 75MPH and of course you need to expeditiously pass that HD, logging truck, SUV, RV or semi that is impeding the mighty X's progress from big rally to out of state friends...RIGHT?
so does a power commander or different airbox or pipes give better mpg or worse?

thanks for good answers

i had a gl1800 that got 40ish so i was suprised initially that vtx 1800 was less (i now know about diff engine types flat opposed and vtwin sorta)
I normally get 38-40 mpg on the road depending on speed. I got 43 once when riding with a group doing around 55 mph (183 miles) and 26 mpg once riding between Sheridan and Billings hit speeds of 135mph and never dropped below 110. That was the quickest I ever went through a tank of gas. I ran out of gas a few miles from Billings and had coasted down to 75 mph when I came around a corner and saw two troopers parked with their radar pointed at me. Just lucky I guess? sb
i love 2 go thru montana. my gas always goes real quick then,

100mph pulling a trailer b4. way fun
Improve mileage

I have read several times an open air box and pipes will increase gas mileage. So I did the desmog/open airbox/ clayton exhaust mod and I'll be darned. My mileage increased from 42mpg to 47.3mpg combined country Rd and freeway. Doing about half on freeway around 75-80mph. I have tour shield and lowers and it was windy. I am shocked. I drove normal and was not babying it. I have the stock ecu, no PCIII.:D My bike is a 02, 1800R. weighs 840lbs with all accessories.
Riding habits!

On one tank of fuel I made a full effort to ride economically. Some of the things I do, some people may frown on, such as coasting down long hills.

On a car ( 2001 Crown Victoria ) we were getting 16-17 MPG. Doing the coasting trick " in neutral " allowed us to push the milage up into the low 20's. We also cut back on fast starts. Oh and start slowing down sooner for stops at lights. Also on the car, we increased the tire pressure and got a little more MPG.

I don't think there is a magic bullet you can install on a bike to give you more MPG.

It's all about riding style, I guess!

Haven't we done this thread before?
We have a Mercury Grand Marquis and it gets 25-28 on the highway with the 4.6 liter v8.
Just did a few 600+ mile day trips in it within the last month and it's always consistent.

Yeah we do mid-upper 20's like that on the highway.

What I did was look at my around town driving, some of which actually involved pulling a trailer. The trailer really pulls the numbers down.

AS for the VTX1800, well I have not had it long enough to test it out. Only have 550 miles on it.
I have found I can get any where I want to go on one or more tanks what else can you ask for. lol :dontknow:
Damn the mileage---just rock the beast:yikes:
someone had to say it
i wonder if mod wise a hyper charger air thingy makes better mpg?

I think you have to open up the exhaust too. PCIIIs seem to drop gas mileage. Not really needed. Stock Pcm will adjust for proper AF ratio.

do u mean air intake area? and pcm is the efi version of re jetting correct?
My X was dyno'ed with vance and hines bigshots with no baffles, and a hypercharger intake. I get 30-35mph. Recently I got wise and bought a wideband commander to get realtime a/f readings since I am now running nitrous, so although tuning by a/f is not the most hp/torque accurate, it does save me alot of $$$ on a dyno, and it's fun to screw around with anyway.

Point being? since that original dyno map, I now have Thunder Monster Baffles and since they have more constriction (as desired) to improve my backpressure and improve my torque (and thereby horsepower) and now having the availability to see my a/f ratio and it's way rich,,,understandably since I was tuned for more airflow which now isn't there....so i've been working the map over (slowly reducing my extra fuel and should end up with a little bit better mileage....we'll see what ends up materializing...

That said, I did have 32mph before doing anything to my map and before I got my wideband, sometime last year I tweaked the map between 5-20% throttle and 1750-2750 I have it set up at zero fuel (like the zero map) and that helped get me closer to 35mpg during cruising....but it still didn't help the 11.3:1 I was getting under 60% Throttle position and the 10.3% I was getting under 40% between 3000-4250 rpm...

all that to say...glad I have a wideband since i'm sure that rich mixture was doing some damage....pretty extreme for everyday driving...

Called an ECM on our bikes. The computer that adjusts the air fuel mixture on fuel injection. Guys piggy back PCIII on it to increase fuel for hp and performance. Gas mileage will suffer depending how it is tuned. Our stock ECM can adjust for changes in air flow without it. Open airbox mod(air intake area) along with clayton mod seems to have increased my mpg. I'll keep checking my mileage for consistancy. Might be a fluke.
I get a kick out of the "mileage" concerns. This is one of the largest displacement motorcycle engines you can buy. It's going to burn some fuel. And as far as riding conservatively to save a bit of fuel goes, the heck with that. I bought this thing to gallop, not trot. Part of the problem is also the less than optimal aftermarket fuel controllers. Unless you're going to spend the dough to have your bike custom mapped (by someone that KNOWS what they're doing) you are better off just letting the stock ECM do it's thing. Throwing more fuel at an already relatively rich engine is not doing it any favors. I've ridden behind some VTXs and I could'nt believe the stink of gas coming from the pipes.
Mileage

I get about 28mpg around town and 35 to 38 country. Of course I am on the throttle hard at times. To hard not too! Unleash the power I say.
