I just got back from visiting grandkids. On the interstate, I got 145 miles to reserve. i used 4.06 gals. of gas for about 36 MPG. This was running at 80-85 MPH with spurts to 90-95 MPH. (All figures are indicated , not refigured for speedo error)
Bike is stock (17K miles) with scar carb pilot at 2 1/2 turns and shortened main spring to 6 inches. MS 21 bags and tal trunk. Tires at 38 front 40 back.
My question is is this normal gas mileage at those speeds? Can I get better milage with smaller main jet without leaning out the mix too much to cause golden exhaust pipes?
Thanks for the help.

This question invariably and repeatedly comes up on this board.
My 2006 "C" is all stock.
No matter what I do, or how I ride, I seem to always get 39mpg.

Keep this in mind - though the Speedometer may be off somewhat, your odometer is pretty accurate.

On the highway, one-up I can get slightly over 50 MPG ... but it takes effort on my part to avoid heavy throttle usage.

Also I am running 65 - 75 when I get 50 mpg. I'd imagine over that mileage drops off.

My worse case was last week - 2up - speeds over 80 mph on a 120 mile run 41 mpg.

I get 130-135 miles avg 70-75 mph before reserve on a speedo-healer odometer - dead on accurate.

This is a routine number - like clock work. 130-135 hit the reserve.

Sounds right for that speed. I can get 170-190 miles on a tank if I'm taking it easy. I've even gone about 200 miles a few times.

You hear all the talk about the speedo being off but the odometer is right on. I have a GPS and my odometer is exact. The speedometer is off by about 10% though.

wassup - I noticed some of the odometers are correct, however, mine indicated 1.1 to 1.2 miles for every mile marker on the highway. Also per my truck, it's 26 miles from my house to work, but the VTX shows about 29. Been thinking about a spedohealer to correct both speed and odometer, but I just mentally calculate the 10% or so difference.

I was getting to 140 pretty consistently b4I hit reserve but since I did the oil change on Sunday I have only gotten 122 b4 I've gone to reserve. Seems like a big difference especially since the 140 was for all arojnd stuff (commuting, around town, etc) & the 122 has been on a trip where I have maintained a pretty consistent speed.

I wrote about the oil change earlier in the week (Rotella-t thread). I suspect the bike had syn oil in it & when I did the oil change on Sunday I used dino oil. It is running a little noisier since & now my gas mileage has dropped a big chunk.

Don't know but the only thing that changed was the oil it seems like it made a lot of difference & I don't like the changes at all.

The group I ride with usually rides on highways not interstates so our average MPH is only around 55-60. Even riding 2 up all the time we are in the upper 40's to lower 50's for milage - but I have a very light throttle hand, don't accelerate very hard. Worst I ever got was riding hard 2 up on the freeway, running 80 - 90 (indicated) and only got about 36 that tank.
