Went to work out tonight and decided that, since it was such a nice night, I'd take backroads home instead of the highway.

Going about 45 mph (the posted speedlimit) and heading up a slight hill when what do I see ahead of me... a possum in the middle of my lane. It looks at me and attempts to run, but doesn't make it. A little thump and it's all over.

Three things hit me after this happened.

1. The stock lighting sucks. I came up on he possum and barely had time to react. Even at a relatively moderate speed the stock light doesn't illuminate crap. I gotta either get a lightbar or a new headlight bulb.

2. The MSF basic course covers driving over road hazards. I took it a few weekends ago and everything came back.

3. Had I gone down at least I had on riding gear... Full face helmet, Tourmaster Intake jacket, gloves, kevlar jeans, and boots. It probably would have hurt, though.

Went to work out tonight also and decided that, since it was such a nice night, I'd take backroads home instead of the highway.

Three things hit me after this happened.

1. The possum made no attempt to get out of the way.

2. The possum seemed to have no fear.

3. The possum was wearing a Full face helmet, Tourmaster Intake jacket, gloves, kevlar jeans, and boots!!!!

Ha I think they call it target fixation. You hit what your looking at.
Reminds me of a poker run in the '80's we went on.
There were about six of us all cruisin the backroads on a local poker run.
Scooter was in the middle of the pack, and flower sniffen, Leader points to roadkill and everyone points back , Well Scooter sees it and comes from the right of the lane to the left and Tbones the roadkill. I'm behind him and see it happen I'm laughin till I get to it, WHEW  , It was a skunk!
needless to say scooter had to ride in the back for the rest of the day.
It smelled sooooo bad. i almost wet myself.

I've hit a possum (ran over his nose), a squirel, a rabbit and a bat. Damn near took out a spotted little bambi on the way in to the house this morning. I figure they are terrorist animals trying to take us out one motorcycle at a time.
The guy at the MSF course said to avoid runnung over anything bigger than a cat. Haven't taken one of them out yet.

My Father In Law hit a Armadillo on his way home from work one night last summer. He said he only had time to raise up and lean back. There was no thump when he hit this. He said he ramped up off of it and went a couple of feet in the air. A pretty hard hit. Dillos are some tough suckers!

Can't talk from personal expirience about hitting living things (except a few bugs which hurt like the dickens at 60mph). Had a friend who owned a CBR. One day he hit a rabbit and panicked. Guess he braked at the exact wrong time and caught it under his front wheel. The rabbit didn't hold up to well to the wheel and (for a lack of a better term) kinda came apart. He said it was like grease under his front wheel and downed his bike. He was ok, bike was mostly ok, but it took us about 3 months to get the story out of him.

twp things struck home. couple weeks ago hit a possum, was on concrete divider highway coming home at night when out of side vision something kinda whitish jumps over barrier and hits right behind my left foot on frame. didn't get under rear wheel. car behind me dealt the fatal blow.
other was the armadillo football thing, tried that when 16 years old on honda 175 street legal dirtbike, had boots on and decided to give a kick about 20 mph, dam near tore me off the bike and hurt like hell for days. dillo walked off.

We don't have Possums up here! But we sure make up for it with Skunks, Racoons and Porcupines!!! Never hit any of those, but I did hit a Poodle! Happened in a split second -- I seen it, braced myself, and raised my self on my legs, and all I heard was thump!

OUCH!

Other than the squirrel that looked like he wanted to bite the bike when I drove by him, haven't really had anything like that happen to myself.

However, last summer riding up North on vacation, had some funny stuff happen.

#1: 3 bikes, 2 with passengers. (I ride in the rear especially if I'm in unfamiliar territory) My cousin on lead bike starts kicking down through the gears and slowing waaaay down. I'm thining 'what the heck is wrong now?' Turns out a little doe decided she wanted a closer look at the bike and walked right up to him. He could have pulled her tail as he drove by her!!

#2: Later that night, same 3 bikes, same riding pattern. The guy on the middle bike is about 30 feet in front of me. I hear him screaming something and kicking down through the gears...the bike is swerving like crazy. Pull up next to him when he stops and he's spitting and sputtering like a madman. Turns out a BAT flew into his face at about 40 mph! He said all he saw was wings and teeth!!
Once we realized he was ok, just a little messy, I almost wet my pants!! :p

At 3:30AM about a week ago I had a big Owl fly up from the side of the road and go by right between my helmet and shoulder, if I would have had my 2-up windshield on I would have hit it. I was going 60mph I guess it thought I was going slower!

Funny thing my wife hit a Owl in the same spot last year with her Toyota Rav4, it left skid marks from the front to the back of the roof. :(
