Hi, I was wondering if anyone could chime in about this. My friend has a 1800C and we just put in a new battery from Batteries Plus. The battery only fits one way and once we hooked it up, we realized that the new battery is opposite polarity than it is supposed to be. After trying to start it, I noticed the backwards polarity. Now the bike starts and runs for a couple of seconds and sputters out. We didn't even think the battery could be backwards as it only goes in the one way to hook up. Any help would be great. Thanks.

One of the things that need to be verified before ordering and installing.
Seems the VTX batteries have the reverse post batteries for other applications.

1800C what year.

You said it starts, runs for a second and sputters out. Amazing...
Is there a Fuel pump prime when IGN turned on???

05/06 C and F got an extra fuse hiding in the right side cover. In a 3 fuse holder/box a 20 amp fuse designated FI, Ignition, Fuel Pump

All 1800 have 2 - 30 amp fuses in the left frame cover. 3 fuse holder/box.

Exact same problem

I just had the exact same thing happen to me. Bought a batteries plus battery with reverse polarity. Installed it, would not start, took it out and realized it was backwards. Got a new one and installed it. Bike starts for a second or two and sputters out. Will not run.
What is the cause? Is this a fuse or did we fry something else? Help please.

The ECU is the Engine Control Unit or the brain of the bike.

The fuel pump should whine when you turn the key to the "ON" position and you will hear it on your 2006 near the back of the bike under the seat. If you don't hear that, the pump isn't working. But, since both of you say the bike will start, but shuts off right away, the pump is fine. If the pump didn't prime the fuel system, it would not start

It is conceivable that because it starts at all, the ECU may be okay and the problem is some sensor or something, but the ECU being damaged is a distinct possibility. The easiest way to troubleshoot this would be to find an ECU you can borrow to see if that solves the problem. Otherwise you will need to start troubleshooting all sensor information into the ECU vs all of the ECU output to the ignition and fuel systems. Almost certainly you will need an oscilloscope and a DMM at a bare minimum for that ... and some good diagnostic method and system knowledge.

If you can find an ECU to borrow, at least you will eliminate or verify the hardest to troubleshoot device in the system.

Happened to me as well, also batteries plus. I just touched the last terminal on and it sparked, it blew one fuse under the left side cover. Check them all to be sure.

If it were a fuse, it would not start at all. As I read it, the engine will start and dies a short time after. That's not a fuse problem
Many mysteries in life.
Reverse voltage the starter motor should run backwards, sprag should not engage, engine should not crank over.

Correct voltage - possibly starter relay stuck and cranked engine for an extended time.

Many mysteries.... did it run?
