Hello To All , I bought my 2002 VTX 1800 R last year.(2018) With only 6500 Miles on it and being in almost mint condition. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to start a project bike. I have a 2004 RoadKing that I've been riding for many years but it has 136K miles on it. My wife has a 2005 VTX 1800 C that leaves my Road King in her dust. I am looking forward to your ideas and thoughts on my VTX project. Thank you

1. Ask the previous owner if they had replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator, or FPR. These are a known fail item on the early models 2002 is the earliest. They fail due to age, not miles. A bad FPR allows too much fuel into the combustion chambers and the excess washes down the cylinder walls into the engine case thinning the oil. If you don't know if it has been changed , change it they are only around $40. Here's how to do that;

2. Tighten the battery connections and do what we call "The Ground Fix" paying special attention to the "Common Electronics Ground" section. These 2 items make the bike run poorly as the ECU likes good grounds. This can be found on our "How To;Step-by-Step" board here https://www.vtxoa.com/forums/97-1800-section/335196-1800-ground-fix-tapper.html

Welcome. I'm on my 4th VTX 1800. They are great bikes and easy to work on. Look over that bike well, to include all of the fluids (brake, oil, fork, etc.).
