After a few years, the rear Kenda finally wore down. Replaced with a matching Pirelli Route 66 from Dennis Kirk, same as the front. Holy smokes these are soft, grippy tires! Maybe I’m just used to the hard, slick Dunlops and Kendas, but these Pirellis soften the ride a lot and make handling in corners SO much easier!

I’m glad that my rear Kenda lasted longer than the front, so for a budget tire, I think I got my money’s worth.

Lesson of the day: don’t just grab the grey plastic jar off your shelf and start slathering the shiny goop onto your driveshaft and wheel splines. Because one of these is not like the other lol

45 minutes and 20 Q-tips later, the wheel was off again, splines completely cleaned, and the right stuff put on.

Good luck with your sale.

I looked at your Craigslist page and noticed the rear bearings issue.
Did you use a pressure washer to clean your VTX?

No pressure washer; always hand-washed. This is where it started:

There's a design flaw in the rear hub that crushes the inner flange bearing over time. When I replaced the front wheel and had to remove the rear wheel bearings to get to the flange bearings, I decided to replace all of the bearings, all at the same time.

I am well aware of the flange bearing issue.

The bearings and spacer are very rusty.
I see water drops in the bearing area, unless that was something you were doing on the wheel.
I checked the flange bearings when I installed a new rear tire, notchy, replaced.
Mine were good for 189k miles.

Sorry, I forgot that you and I talked about that on my other thread.

Ah, now I understand the pressure washer question. Yes, the bearings and spacers had a bit of rust on them (both front and rear wheels, and even the brake pivot shaft) so it had definitely been ridden in the rain (I'm guessing quite a bit, too). The liquid you see in the pictures is the penetrating fluid I was using to try and get the bearings out.

I think one of the longest parts of that job was getting rid of every last little bit of rust and making sure everything got a decent coating of grease before/during reassembly. It's been ~10k miles since I did that repair, and everything still sounds/feels like it's supposed to.
