The fuse is to protect the wiring.
So if your +12v wire rubs on the frame somewhere and when it wears through the insulation,
the wire will get hot, burn insulation and possibly adjacent wiring.

Many factory tender pigtails have a fuse.
Low amp fuse to protect the wiring and the battery tender.

Now that I think of it, the pigtail from the tender does have a fuse.
So the answer to the original question is no, not running down battery?

fuse is probably a good idea
i would hook it up to a "key on" power supply.
kinda like we do with ATV winches.
:key off"...no power... no battery drain...no problems!

I have my GPS wired into the main feed to the headlight circuit.
my battery tender connector is just below the bike key switch.

Chuck, are you saying with my setup there is a drain inside of battery? Gps is not attached to socket. Isn't it power available but not used, like a light switch is on for the lamp with no bulb in it? Otherwise, pig tail not attached to tender would be constantly putting a drain on battery, right? If so I will just unplug pigtails until using gps.

No power at all used on an open circuit. No different than the 120 receptacles in your house. I also prefer mine to be hot all the time.

NO.

Wikipedia says: Self-discharge is a phenomenon in batteries in which internal chemical reactions reduce the stored charge of the battery without any connection between the electrodes. Self-discharge decreases the shelf-life of batteries and causes them to initially have less than a full charge when actually put to use.

and the reason for the "Battery Tender" smart battery maintainer

If you were referring to me, I already knew that. My question was unrelated.
