03 VTX 1800R - Working on bike today and noticed the rear brake resevour appears to be empty. The resevour on the handle is full, the fluid is clean. I've never had any problems. Is this normal? Does it fill when brakes are in use? Can I remove the cap from the rear resevour and add fluid?
Thanks

They are separate. You could be having some serious trouble with your rear brake. Your handlebar res ONLY drives the outside pistons on the front brakes. your rear res drives the middle pistons up front and your rear caliper. So figure out what's wrong, because right now you are lacking in a large percentage of your stopping power.

Yes, you can add fluid, it's not any different than the front res in function, just looks different.

As the brake pads wear the fluid pushes the caliper pistons outward and this causes the fluid level to decrease. If you have no leaks and they brake pads are not worn out then add fluid and you are good to go. Inspect the pads for wear even if you have to take them off to check them. Rear pads wear out faster than the front.
