Yep, took my 31 day old 1300 on the highway today. My speedo said I was doing 70 and everyone was passing me. I did a search on this forum for "speedometer calibration" and learned that my speedometer is probably 10-15% TOO HIGH.

I guess I will have to get one of those Speedohealers if I want a true reading.

FYI for all you new owners.

We can send a man to the moon, invent Twinkies and SPam and have people get rich off of PET ROCKS, but we can't have a accurate speedometer in 2006 - bummer.

Silver Bikes are slower !

Hi, It's because your bike is still in primer that it runs slower than the speedo ! LOL ! I bought a small GPS from a board member here ( Sportrak pro ) and use that for my actual speed . On the highway to go 72 actual MPH i have to go 80 Honda mph . Hope that helps . Ride safe ......WVleo

ahhhhh... twinkies and spam..yummmm..great inventions :p

As far as pet rocks go, I had one before they were even invented..
I was thirteen and some sweet lil chicky threw one at me..for some strange reason that eludes me now... I drilled a hole thru it and ran a gold chain thru the hole and wore it around my neck.
Marcie was her name 8) < the girls..not the rock> :D

I could have been rich and famous..

It might be safest to velcroe a gps on your bike and on flat straight roads check your speed at the legal postings to see if your difference is a fixed 10% or sliding. I'd do 35, 55 and 70. And, IMHO, a Garmin GPS is the most accurate. Aviation grade would be the best to go with.

It must be a Honda thing. My 02 goldwing was off about the same. I've ridden with several brands and the Honda seems to be off more than the others. I think its a conscience effort by Honda, just like overstating the horsepower. Theres the perception of going faster than you actually are, and I guess that's what they want.

I use a Garmin eTrex Legend when I go Geocaching. that is when I learned that the speedo is 10% over actual. Not a big deal. So now I ride 75 (speedo) and not worry about it.

You could fix it for about the same price as an eTrex or spend even a little more and get a GPSr that does autorouting.

Then you change wheels and/or tires and it gets more out of whack!
I thought the speed sensor was off the tranny (crankcase).....
Tire size factors into the final drive ratio too...

go here: http://www.powerdog.com/tiresize.cgi

enter your tire size the plus and minus size it and see the percentage differences.

Every street bike I have ever had is the same way...I just subtract 10%...how far off can that be? If I want to go 65mph I run at 72mph. Around town I just stay within 5mph. Never had a problem. Not even RRKR would stop you for going 2-3 over the speed limit...unless he was chasing you for a doughnut!

Yep - I guess I can calculate 10%. I may be offended.

Nope - I'm not

Ok, so that 188 I used to get on my 900RR was more like 150? Or even 140?

Damn. And I had so much work done to that one too.
I wouldn't say that...more like 165 or 170.  Too freakin' fast for this old man!!

Never used a gps device and have heard quite a few of you using them to see how far off your speedo is. I realized mine was off the first time I took my bike out and everybody was passing me and I was doing 70. So I am wondering how they work, if you use it to plot from one point to another or if they actually show your mph. I'm sure someone will straighten me out on this.

Differnent models do different things but most models will give you a screen that shows MPH, distance travelled, etc......

I love my Garmin V (except for its paltry 20 mb memory)......I have a hard wire into my bike's electrical system for it and a special mount.....LOVE IT.

You load maps into it and then you can either use it to plot a course or just use it to find your way home when you get yourself lost. Like anything else though, it does require a bit of a learning curve. You also have to TRUST it. If you try to second guess its directions you will get hosed up everytime.

The other thing is that it works off of maps 100%.....so it doesnt know that the way you go to work is really the faster ay even though the maps say it should take twice as long as another way......

But it is a great accessory to have while riding or driving.

Ok OK im not one to go out and by a $200 gps, or speedo fixer duhikey.
This one is free unless you dont know how to count, or dont own a stop watch.
Since time is in 60's. 60sec in a min, 60min in an hr.
This is easy algebra get on highway that you can run 60mph=60secs or 1min to run 1mile. You can also do this at 30mph=120sec=2min to get 1mile. That is the free easy way to do it.

I did that and I was right on :D

I put a SpeedoHealer on my VYX1300C and my GL1800. BOth are spot on and to me it was $ well spent. Of course, the ODO is still a bit off on both of them such that 100 miles indicated is actually 102 miles traveled.

I checked my odometer and, by default, speedometer on the interstate. At interstate speed, 65 to 75, my odo appears to be about 5% off, ie. when the interstate mile markers said that I had travelled 20 miles, which I assume to be correct, my odo showed that I had travelled 21 miles.
Let me get out my bovine calculator.

Yep 100 miles vs 105 that'd be 5%.

I just hate having a wrong speedo.
