Recently had a problem with my starter solenoid/relay.
It would engage, and start the bike but would not disengage.
Kept the starter going after the bike started up.
Not hard to fix just peck it with something and it would let go, but if you didn't notice it it would just keep on spinning.

I'm sure at some point I didn't catch the stuck relay after starting and it continued to spin the starter while I was riding (kind of easy to miss with the big shots), probably never more that 30 minutes tops.

I replaced the solenoid/relay and all appeared well. Although the starter still seemed a bit sluggish, like it took everything it had to turn the motor over.

Yesterday after replacing tires and bike being on stand for a while, I thought I'd start it up.
The starter still seemed to drag really badly, like it could just barely turn the engine over.
It started, but now the new solenoid was stuck.


Question is this:
Could this stuck relay have somehow damaged the starter itself, making it weaker so that it struggles to turn the motor over? Forcing it to pull lot of current and possibly frying the relay?

Thinking about just replacing the starter to be sure, but would rather not, if it's not needed.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar.

A weak battery causes the starter relay to weld the contacts together..

With a long term starter motor run the battery is worse than before.

Now you need a new starter relay and a new battery.

1800 Starter motors seem to handle the extra run time, none failed that I can remember..

Stuck starter relay is a very common problem........

100 percent ALL "FACT" known issue for MANY YEARS.
hundreds of post to prove this...


I do the 100 amp load test on the battery every year..
I am still using my original solenoid... 14 years and 86,000 miles.
