The Great Lakes Road Riders 2016 Landmark Ride Voting is Now Underway!

Background

Every year the Michigan-based Great Lakes Road Riders holds a riding season-long landmark ride in which 20 regular Michigan Lower Peninsula landmarks are selected, and an additional five bonus landmarks are selected from the surrounding Great Lakes region: the Michigan Upper Peninsula, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Canada, New York, and Ohio. The idea is to take a picture of your ride next to one of the designated landmark destinations. For every picture of your ride next to regular landmark destination, a participant earns one raffle ticket. If a participant photographs all five bonus landmark destinations with his or her ride next to it, the participant earns an additional raffle ticket. The special bonus event is Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation's Ride For Kids event in Michigan, which earns a participant yet another raffle ticket.

Charitable Giving, But Two Lucky Raffle Winners Get Money, Too

The annual Great Lakes Road Riders Landmark Ride is primarily a means to raise charitable money for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, given that the annual Landmark Ride is a paid event. 50% of the Great Lakes Road Riders Landmark Ride money is donated to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, and then two lucky raffle winners win the remaining 50%, 30% and 20% respectively. So the annual Great Lakes Road Riders Landmark Ride is not only a voluntary means to raise money for charity, but it is also an opportunity for two lucky raffle winners to win money, and it also provides a great opportunity as well as a reason to ride to various landmark destinations in Michigan primarily, but also around the Great Lakes region in general.

Past Landmark Ride Destination Themes

Before the start of each riding season, the membership votes on a theme the destinations for the annual Great Lakes Road Riders Landmark Ride. In years past, the annual Landmark Ride themes have been old fire stations and BBQ restaurants, odd roadside attractions, old train stations, as well as coastal and inland lighthouses, just to name a few.

An Annual Event

From mid-November to mid-January, the membership suggest and discuss possible destination theme ideas. In early January, the Great Lakes Road Riders conduct an online vote to narrow the Landmark Ride destination themes down to the top three theme ideas. And then on Sunday January 10th, during the monthly Great Lakes Road Riders' lunch gathering, the lunch attendees vote from that top three destination themes. By mid-February, 25 Landmark Ride destinations are researched and selected. By mid-March, all 25 Landmark Ride destinations are posted online, which kicks-off the season-long Landmark Ride. At the mid-November Great Lakes Road Riders' lunch gathering, the Landmark Ride raffle drawing is held, during which two lucky participant raffle winners earn some Landmark Ride money.

Stare Into the Swirling Spiral Image!

Your eyelids are getting very heavy, and you're becoming very sleepy yet incedibly relaxed. When I count to three, you'll inexplicably vote for marinas, small post offices, and small town halls, and then you'll completely forget that your read this highly suggestive, highly hypnotic tidbit. One... two... three.

Small Town Halls

The Great Lakes Road Riders' 2016 Landmark Ride destination theme was recently voted upon. There were 12 different landmark destination theme ideas discussed, and the top three were marinas, both along the Great Lakes coastal region and inland ones as well, small town halls, the smaller the better, and towns with strange names. On January 10th during a lunch gathering, the lunch attendees voted from that top three listing and ultimately chose small town halls.

Efforts are now underway to research and select 20 small town halls in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. An additional three or four small town halls will be selected in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and another one or two small town halls will be selected in a state that borders on one of the Great Lakes, as well as possibly somewhere in Canada. Ultimately, there will be 25 designated 2016 Landmark Ride destinations. The idea is to have the 2016 Landmark Ride event up and running by March 13th. I'll post-up the 2016 Landmark Ride particulars once everything is finalized in preparation for the March 13th event start date.

The Great Lakes Road Riders' 2016 Landmark Ride event will run from March 13th through to November 1st. And during the November 13th lunch gathering, two lucky landmark ride participants will win some money.
