Luckily you don't need a passport til 2008 if you're a US citizen, but if you have a DUI conviction or other conviction, you may have to pay a $200 entry fee. It's rather amusing to sit at the border and have a newbie out of the CBSA grill you like you're going into Canada to wreak havoc on them......."Look slick, I'm only going here to watch your canadian ballet and drink some beer."
Since you're going to the Falls, once you cross the border, there's nothing but tourist traps near the bottom of the hill next to the falls, but the further you go uphill on Ferry St, the better the restaurants are, hotels, etc......and if you go alllllllll the way up to the top of the hill which turns into Lundy's Lane after cross QEW, you'll reach the mecca of sin.......Sundowners-one of the finer canadian ballets if I do say so myself.
If that's not your bag there is a casino right next to the falls, you can jump on the QEW and motor right to Toronto too, it's about 80 miles, nice ride on the bike for sure. Of course there's so much to do there, I can't begin to list it here.
You mentioned you're looking to go to Port Dover, London is right nearby, it's an awesome city, great food everywhere, lots of scenery  . Good luck with your trip, not really sure what you're looking to do, if you have some interests you're hoping to check out, let us know, we'll try to help.
