Okay, when I bought this bike it ran like crap for the first 10 mins of any ride. Rough idle, stall, backfiring. Riding with the choke/enricher pulled partway out helped. I ended up swapping the KN air filter out and putting the stock filter in and this fixed the issue.

Since coming out of hibernation, this issue has somewhat returned, not as bad, not backfires. I’ve not ridden much this season yet, but I have run about 2 tanks of gas through it.

Today I rode to work. It was cool and damp today, I had to have the choke pulled about 1/4 of the way out for the first few miles.

After work, still cool and damp, but not as bad as in the morning. Started it with about 3/4 choke, after I got my gear on, I reduced that to 1/4 as per normal. Started riding out of town, and I needed to add more choke. It was almost fully out at one point. Under acceleration it was boggy, and backfiring. Got worse as the rpm got higher. My ride is about 30 mins, with 15 of that going through town. At one point I pulled over and noticed oil pushing out the filler cap. I checked the oil, level was good (recently change).

It eventually stopped, but that was about 5 mins from home.

Any thoughts? I’m leaning towards the carb but I’m not sure.

Test the petcock for fuel flow.
Examine vacuum hoses.
There have been a few issues.
You can also flip a spring in the vacuum diaphragm to the other side to make it a manual petcock function.
Info in the step by step board.

I just read a post on FB about a guy that replaced all his Intake rubber boots & Vacuum lines..
He said it was like night & Day difference, faster throttle response, more power, smoother running by a long shot.... He went on to say that time & engine heat was probably the culprit in their demise!!!
Made a lot of sense to me....
No idea if this is your problem, but I would go with Petcock & fuel all the way into Carb and check all intake areas for possible leaks.. :grin2: :thumbup:

I have a ride today that is important to me, so without digging to far into this yet, I decided to check the air filter and plugs.

Air filter looked good, gave it a cleaning, cleaned the air box and drained the lower tube.

Plugs, all four were replaced in the fall. Upper plugs on both cylinders looked rich. Black and sooty. Gave them a cleaning with a wire brush and put them back. The lower plugs both looked really good. Cleaner and not black.

Put some Seafoam in the tank too.

Haven’t started it yet, I’ll check the battery cables before heading out. Wish me luck.

Okay. Met with my group about 30 miles from home. Bike ran as usual on the way there. Choke for a few miles, then closed for the rest of the trip. We were going to the Annual bike blessing at a local church and then for a 200 mile ride. So since the bike was running well, I stopped to top off the tank. Met the group at a coffee shop and hung out for a little over an hour.

Saddle up for the short ride to the church, and it’s acting up all the way. Needed 1/2 choke to smooth it out. I stayed for the blessing and then just headed home to be safe.

The engine seems very hot. The chrome cap on the oil dipstick is too hot to touch.

I put my inline spark tester on, all plugs firing.

I drained the tank, and removed it.

Gas lines and vacuum lines all look good, but I think I’ll replace them.

Removed air box, all clean, no critters.

Started to remove the carb, I think I’ll need to read up some before messing with it too much. Lots of stuff connected to it.

Took the diaphragm out of the top of the carb and inspected it. Put a flashlight on the opposite side and looked for holes. Didn’t see any. Cleaned the needle and put it back. Cleaned some soot out of the carb.

Checked my exhaust bolts. All were loose. I can’t get at the bottom front one very well, but tightened it as well as I could. Each one took almost a full turn with the socket wrench.

Put everything back together, until I can get the new lines and read up on removing the carb. I think I’ll drain and replace the coolant as well.

Never, EVER ride with the choke out even a little bit. If your bike only runs good that way, FIX IT as you're only making it worse.

Second, Non-ethanol gas has NOTHING to do with it. It's all we have here in Northern Illinois and all our stuff runs like a top on it

Since my last post, I have run Seafoam in the last 2 tanks of gas. Bike starts with no choke. I get the odd sputter as I am leaving my house and shift from first to second, other than that, it's running fine.

Last year I complained of heat off the rear exhaust making my leg uncomfortable, not burning, but hot. Now the air temps haven't gotten too hot yet, but the heat off the pipe seems to be less. I'm wondering if the loose exhaust bolts was causing that issue?

You might consider desmog. Bareasschopper.com has a great info. I did mind and my bike runs fantastic. No pooping on decel and a better sounding exhaust.

Thanks, but this isn't the issue. There's no popping on decel, it was backfiring, like loud gunshots, not popping. Anyway, cleaning the carb and seafoam seems to have done the trick. No pooping either. :wink2:

Sounds like you have done all the right things, glad to hear your bike is running much better.

For some new(er) riders...
A simple process of elimination is sometimes the best way to look at this kind of problem. This is how I approach my Winter storage - from air/fuel intake to exhaust out put. Check everything! This way come Spring (or when I get on to ride) you don't get any surprises. It sounds simple (and actually it is) but it will take some homework on your part - and ask alot of questions, keep notes on your bike... that is part of why we are all here.
