I want to start off by saying that I own a 2006 VTX 1800c. I have had the bike
a little over two months now and have already put over 2k miles on it. Love the
bike, love the power, love the ride. Next, this is my second bike. I started
riding last August, with a shadow 750. Big difference between the two.
Anyways, I never rode with my windshield on, with my 750. Always seemed to bog
the bike down. Not as much power, to me. So I got used to riding without one.
I have tried to ride with a shield on my 1800, and can't seem to get a good
feeling while riding. It may all be in my head, but seems like the bike doesn't
have as much acceleration or that the wind resistance is bogging it down. Am, I
crazy feeling like this. I want to ride with a shield, especially night riding,
bugs etc, but can't bring myself to put it back on. Anyone else have this
problem. Thanks. I want to start off by saying that I own a 2006 VTX 1800c. I have had the bike

It is in your head, the 1800 has plenty of motor to overcome any drag caused by a windshield. It is in your head, the 1800 has plenty of motor to overcome any drag caused by a windshield.

I would never put a windshield on my VTX, they look like crap with one. Not to mention on all the free protein you would be missing out on.

Its in your head. Big diff in feel with the wind hitting your chest and face and pulling against your arms in the wind that you dont have with a windsheild. Makes you feel like your flyin at lower speeds.

Can't give you an honest answer to your question as I do not have nor have I ever ridden a C model, but an 1800 is an 1800 in my opinion. I have the R model and it has all the balz & power I could ever ask for! Have ridden with MS 14" during parade rides, switch to 21" for 2 up touring and now have a Batwing fairing.
I never go to 5th gear unless we're over 50mph ~ maybe that could relieve your "bogging down".

Sounds to me like you already have the answer to your delema. If you enjoy riding without the shield more than with then leave it off. I bought the national cycle switch blade so I could easily ride either way, but I rarely take it off. I don't think it really makes much difference as far as wind resistence as I don't think my carcas any more areodynamic than my shield. I do believe the added wind blast makes the ride feel faster, but for me that sensation wears off pretty quick especially if you plan to cross 4 or 5 states on a ride.

You're crazy, both the 750 and the 1800 will ride fine with the shield on. Until you get to the upper limits of speed for the bikes, then you may lose a few MPH, like on the VTX say 120mph you might feel some resistance

Yup. By 125mph (indicated), my Memphis Shades windshield will deflect about an inch.

IMO the bike does ride differently with a shield. It's not so much drag on the engine what you feel is in your steering, there is wind resistance on the handle bars so it "feels" harder to turn or less agile. You might want to consider quick release. I've got my C rigged with a quick release shield. I can remove the shield in 10 seconds and put my cowl on in about a minute. I'll use the trip on longer rides/trips. If I go out of town for a couple days and am based out of one spot I can leave the shield at the hotel for my day rides..

To Shield or not to Shield... That is the Question.

And you have to answer that for yourself.

We all do.

I tried a winshield this year for 3 rides, its off now. I like the wind and wind was worst on wifes helmet, not good with neck pain. Might try it in the fall again or just sell it.

I prefer to ride without the shield. But once the temp dips below 35-40, it starts to get a bit too cold and at 15-20 degrees, it's almost unbearable when the wind finds a kink in your clothing and gear.

The shield makes a HUGE difference for cold weather riding. I bought a switchblade quick-release system so I can pop the shield off during the warmer winter days.

There is a change in bike handling with a shield, but that is caused by the wind being absorbed and transferred to your handlebars and front end. I agree that it causes an odd feel (which I don't like). However, you should not notice ANY loss of power during normal riding.

80 became the new 40....

Certainly a mind game. Mine did not have a shield for the first couple of months I owned it. Put the Honda line windshield on and went for a ride cruising along thinking I was doing 40 or 50, glanced at the speedo...80:yikes:. It took me several rides watching my speed closely to get the feel of not being beat to death. Then I put some Jetinc lowers on it....sweet! I used to ride a 03 Wing so getting slapped around by the wind is just not my thing. Some people like it that way...personal preference. But I can assure there is no acceleration differences that I can feel. Agree with Spike also on the 750. My dad and son both have vt 750's one shielded on not...no difference in acceleration that I can detect.

i had the ms shield for a short time...it killed me with wind buffeting. my head was getting beat to hell worse than with nothing. i switched to a fairing and it is sweet. my fairing is quick detach but it has not some off since i installed it...cold weather riding is hugely different than with nothing...even everyday high speed cruzing is better to me with the fairing...

Rodeover 30 years withouta shield.Bought a used 2007 1300 with a shield on it and have never thought about taking it off.As stated really helps from keeping the unwanted protein from hitting u,also helps during sudden rainstorm to block some of that unwanted dew falling on u.But it is a personal chojce.Whatever works for u,just do it and ride, ride, ride!!!
