hey i was just needing a lil advice from some of the local wrenches on the board. i just had the vales adjusted on my 04 1800c and now it seems to be backfiring quite a bit and when i blip the throttle every once in a while it will pop out the intake and it seems to have a more pronounced tick. i asked the dealer about the tick and they said it might be the decompression cam. tell me what u think. oh and it has bigshots, a hurricane intake and a pc3.

thanks

I also have a random tick only at idol it comes and goes started at about 2000 miles now I have 17000 no problems with the motor. It has been dynoed and is performing great. I do not believe it is the valves. I believe it is the decompression cam I have recently done the valve adjustment only one out of spec. I have NO backfiring or decell poping what so ever.

I don't think the adjustments to the valves themselves should really do anything to cause backfiring. However, to do the adjustment you have to remove the airbox and lots of hoses that connect to the fuel/air system. One of them may be loose or disconnected and is causing the backfire. You can refer to the PAIR valve removal procedure on bareasschoppers.com to figure out how to remove and examine the airbox yourself or you can take the bike back to the dealer and see if they'll check things out for you. While you (or they) are looking around, you may want to check all the wiring connectors too, for things like the coils and plugs and stuff.

VTX1800 Valve Adjust - Always Noisey

I`ve got 24K on my odo, had the bike since new in 2002. Have adjusted the valve clearances 3 times (once every 8K). Apart from the fact its the worst bloody fiddly job I hate doing, I was always frustrated that even after hours of careful adjustment, the valves were always noisey, ticking and tapping...especially at idle. Finally consulted my dealer who told me to make sure I adjust the clearances to the low side of the tolerance for each gap, i.e, make them on the tight side. I did and it made bugger all difference. Still noisey. Its just a VTX thing. Mechanical tappets are 1920's technology....

As for the predominant ticking, yes, thats the decompression valve. Nothing to be done there. Its just a noisey engine...although mine does sound like a bag of nails.

As for the backfire, I have V&H bigshots and PCIII with K&N filter. Always runs a bit rich and at "neutral" throttle, she pops and bangs like a pissed off dragon. Nothing I can do about that either...its just a VTX thing.
