I recently did an oil/filter change using a premium brand synthetic 10W40 in a gallon jug. I figured a gallon was a gallon but instead of blindly pouring the entire jug into my crankcase, I measured it, and this one had a full 138 ounces of oil in it. That's 10 ounces on the high side.

I'm not sure how the average quart or gallon jug fairs, but my process in the future will be to measure out 128 ounces and not just assume the manufacturer filled each bottle or jug accurately.

I contacted the manufacturer and they are re-checking their fill process and QA.

So I just read your other thread regarding the dipstick not being correct. I think that your measured 4 quarts (1 gallon) is more than that amount and that you most likely had a 5 quart jug (as most oil comes now-a-days). This all seems to make a lot more sense.

5 qts.=160 oz. It's closer to 4 ltrs. than 4 qts. 1 ltr.=33.8 oz. x 4 = 135.2 oz. Or maybe you got the 10 oz. Bonus size.

Repsol comes in 4L jugs, not 4qts also. I'm sure some other manufacturers would do this also.

4L = 4.23 qts = 135.36 oz. = your magic number (plus the 3 oz that gets stuck inside the engine case).

Next time you go to the grocery store, look at something like bottles of dish soap. IME, it's very rare to find every bottle on the shelf filled with the exact same amount of soap.

Look at the bright side, at least you got more oil than you paid for!

Ok clowns...

...I'll clue you in. I ordered and used a sealed gallon jug of AMSOIL 10W40 MCF. If you're really that interested I'll post the reply I received from AMSOIL's VP of Operations, and his explanation.

For disaster-1...AMSOIL doesn't come in 5 Qt jugs. No mistake in the measuring.

For dbx...I didn't hack up my dipstick, I carved it precisely. You should try it.

didn't mean anything bad, have just seen a lot of people make that mistake. I know that I can admit to doing much dumber things in my lifetime.

No offense here either, let me rephrase; Good thing you measured what was supposed to be a gallon before you made your mark. My dipstick works fine, and I don't need no stinkin Viagra, or any new marks on it.

Thanks to this thread (and my first post), I had to buy a gallon of windshield wash today and thought to look through two dozen bottles in order to find the one that was fuller than the others. And yeah, that's the one I bought! Yeah, baby - this is me, stickin' it to the man!

What I do when I buy that stuff is take a little needle and stick a small hole in the bottom of all the other jugs, so it's not that mine is more full it's that all the other bottles are more empty.... :joke:
