Newb question about exhaust noise

Ok, so this is a newb question I think, even though I've been riding street bikes for 30 years. So sorry, but...

Why does the VTX make a "huge sucking sound" when accelerating and changing gears? I know this sound isn't isolated to vtxs only as I've heard it on other (not all) bikes. It just seems extreme on my 1800. Sounds like it's sucking a catfish up the pipe!

Curious if there's some mod I can do to reduce or even eliminate.

2006 VTX 1800c (FI) stock airbox, stock header pipe with Roadhouse muffler

Thanks!

If you're talking about a whale farting sound when you roll off the throttle to switch gears, then it's the PAIR valve not the airbox. A stock airbox doesn't make any sound, at least mine didn't. Did you check it recently? Maybe a mouse made a nest in yours and it is restricting the airflow, don't laugh, happens all the time

Whale fart... Love it! Much better description than my catfish. Thanks for the laugh!

Yes, I've recently had the airbox off and it's clean as a whistle. (Cept a tad of weep from the crankcase line.)

I was thinking stock airbox like it might be "asking" for more air.

Oh btw, is it still possible to get the "block off plate" for the desmog? The links in your write-up no longer connect.

Thanks again for the help!

Yeah, I forgot to mention dimpled or undimpled.

The dimple saves you 5 min. from removing the screw & reed. It only fits one way. BTW, re: pipes: IMHO, it's better to be HEARD than NOT seen!

When you do your desmog, go ahead and remove the snorkel and flapper valve thing that is attached to the upper inside of the back of the box. You will see it in the write-up on bares site. It opens up a good size area for more air flow. Also, consider rerouting your crankcase breather to an external universal type breather filter. This eliminates any oil accumulation at the air filter. Just be sure to cap that nipple on the backside of the airbox.

Finally got to this project. Did both desmog and sas removal. Man there's a lot of stuff that came off this bike. Great walk through on Bare's site! That rear reed valve assy was a bi.ch to get to.

Happy with the results. Don't hear much difference in sound except bike does seem to run smoother. Question: is it normal that the bike would now run at lower rpm? Not complaining, just wondering. I don't THINK I hit anything that would have caused that...?

Also, "whale fart/catfish sound" is still present on decel. It's not a popping sound. I can live with it but, if there's a way to eliminate it, I'd like to...

Ok so I picked up a used set of pipes through classifieds here. Took off the stockers and guess what...no crush gaskets and the studs in the rear cylinder were loose. Almost put the stock pipes back on to see what a difference that would make (after tightening and installing new gaskets) but...naaaaah! On with the new pipes...! Anxious to get her out in the morning for a test run.

Pumped...
