Speedometer variance

Noticed riding the other day that the speedometer is off by anywhere from ~2-8mph depending on speed... is this common or do I have an issue with my gauge cluster?

Also had a weird thing happen... glanced down to see the speedo fly all over the place real quick, then I noticed my trip distances had been reset... I may have to check the connection to the cluster to make sure it's tight. I was just in there and everything seemed ok.

Thoughts?

It's pretty well established that the speedo shows about 10% over reality. It's easy to do the math while your riding, or there are various products to correct - search speedo healer.

The bouncing of the speedo needle and the resetting of the trip readings is common with loose battery connections or the green connectors under the right side of the tank. Tighten the battery cables with a wrench or socket. Be careful not to strip the bolts.
